General Boot carpet attachment

Hi - pensioner, just bought my 1st fiat 500 and have a quick question.......

What is supposed to keep the boot carpet attached to the bumper side of the boot? The bit with the red pull handle is just flopping loosely at the moment and doesnt seem to attach to anything!!

That's pretty much it. Mine stands off about half an inch and early on I thought about using hook and loop fastener to make it look tidier but in the end didn't bother.
