My bonnet release has stopped working, any ideas how to open the bonnet without it and then how to fix it? I need to disconnect the battery as I'm currently removing the dash.

How broken is broken? Mine no longer has a handle, and the bonnet is opened by just yanking on the white plastic cable sleeve somewhere near the passengers feet!
The cable (on mine at least) runs close to the front of the car (to the passenger side) so you may be able to remove the grille and reach your hand in - not sure though. This might help to visualise it:

The cable and handle are still operating, just not pulling the hinge I think
You need someone to assist, pull a bit harder but try not to damage( when handle in max position put on the cable itself)
While one, undo the rubber bunks/ bump stops by quarter of turn, lubricate latch, fit some shims ( washer with slot) to the sleeve end at the latch side.

Perfect, I have it open now by removing the grille and moving the latch. I'll give the mechanism some attention in the morning. Thanks for the help 
Sounds like std Panda 2 person bonnet opening...... One lifts the bonnet while the other pulls the handle.
Or you can try shoving something under one front corner and pulling the handle yourself

is there a fix for the bonnet not popping up when lever is pulled? mine all seems to be working as it should, but it doesn't pop the bonnet

Try to unscrew both rubber bump stops either corner.
Pin should be paraller to the latch.

This tends to happen with age as the cables get stretched and sag so they become difficult to operate, mine ended up this way although unscrewing the rubber bump stops as already suggested does tend to fix it.
