Go the B back today from a different garage after a service. Alfa / Lancia specialist in Dublin. Garage said its ok apart from one big problem.

Engine is blowing back hard through the oil filler cap with a strong chuffing sound and a fine mist of oil with it. Garage guy thinks I've been 'thrashing the balls off it' his words and have buggered the valves! They want it back for a strip down and estimate.

Car's been well looked after by 2 owners. Has 38k miles on and been treated well by me and the previous owner. Goes fine, doesn't use any oil, doesn't overheat and does about 30mpg driven normally.

Anybody any ideas what the fault could be before I let them tear it down?

Thanks. Ask and the experts will advise! :) Curious 'cos non of my previous 3 Fiats did it..The mighty 1.2 Stilo (knicker elastic edition) or the Coupes...

If you twist the cap but not release it when engine is on you can feel a kind of suction force applied on it... I guess you tighten the cap well & end of story..

The old FORD V4 engine would not run without the oil filler cap securely in place.......my father in law used to work for Ford 'back in the day' and they had endless issues with people topping up their oil and not putting the cap on properly resulting in the car not starting, or starting and running like a 3 legged horse!

They have a metal plate under the filler cover inside so more difficult to blow up through the open hole.

I'm very supprised by what they said as almost every car I've had that's been OHC with the filler on top has done this. If you open the filler cap while the engine is running the cams are rotating so throw the oil all over the place, so almost inevitable that you will get covered in oil with the cap off

Thanks. One more garage to avoid..also some of their 'throw away' comments after the event..'Good little car these..based on the old Tipo, we see lots of them'.

No it isn't, no you don't. There are only a handful of B's in Ireland. I've only ever seen 1 other on the road.
