Today I completely removed the front wiring loom from the Road Rat, having managed to get hold of a replacement loom to sort out all the electrical gremlins. However, when comparing them side by side they have a lot of differences that make it a non-starter to even think about attempting to use it. I can't believe how much hassle and cost the electrics are causing me. I only have a couple of days here to get any work done and I reckon I've now set myself back a week or more instead of making progress. Seems to be a common factor of the last few times I've worked on the car. I'm beginning to think I'm never going to finish it.

Anyway, looks like I'm going to have to waste more money and time to get a proper loom. I'm off to the 'wanted' section now.

I'm not sure but I think it's from a 1000CLX. There is only one big connector for the rear part of the loom whereas mine has two smaller ones. Also, the connectors for the stalks are completely different and while the plugs that connect to the back of the instrument panel are physically the same they are wired differently. And just to confuse things even more they seem to have changed the wire colour coding too. There are too many obstacles to make it worth all the work of trying to figure out what does what and rewiring it all. I'm back to square one with the wiring basically.:bang:

One more thing; at least I think I can see where the problem was with my loom now it's out. There is a completely burnt out connector and wire in the back of the fuse box. Comparing the old with the new one I also seem to be missing a wire too. Odd. There's a stump of wire coming from the burnt out connector in the same place as a rather hefty brown cable is on the newer fuse box.

Will be an injection loom then probably, there aren't many carb'd CLXs I dont think, not even certain there ever was as I never seen one.

Ah well, it's my own fault. I never thought to ask when I was offered it. I really need to be getting a loom off a Mk2 4x4. At least there are a load of useful bits attached to the loom that I could use for spares.

We'll the only thing the front loom I have hasn't that the 4x4 has is the 4wd selected switch cable, and thus light circuit for dash.

It also has only the one connector block for the rear loom.

I can dig it out and take pic's of certain connectors to confirm colour codes if need be?

Thanks for the offer Jon but I have already sourced another loom (this time definitely from a 4x4). I won't be able to do anything with the electrics this time around as I won't be getting it for a couple of weeks but I'll just crack on with some other little jobs for now. Next time I'm here I'm going to dedicate all my time to sorting out the electrics. I'm certainly amassing a large pile of wires though!

Well, electrical problems notwithstanding I've at least managed to make some progress in other areas.

Interior:
Made a panel with plywood, carpeted, to act as a centre console which will house the CD/MP3 player. It also acts a support/surround for the heater and controls.

Made a new panel for the back of the cab. This will be carpeted and installed on the next trip (after sorting the electrics of course).

Underneath:
Raised the back of the petrol tank by about an inch after I noticed it didn't sit flat on the existing rear mount. Also routed and cable tied the tank vent hose into place. It's just been coiled up and hanging loose since I fitted the tank.

Under the bonnet:
Fitted the second tailgate strut so the bonnet now opens properly with the aid of a strut on either side. It's also much more secure and wobble free in the upright position.

Rear lights:
I had the fog and reverse lights the wrong way round at the back so I had to dismount them both and swap them around. Reverse light should be on offside and fog light should be on nearside. (Check pictures in some of my other posts to see what I mean).

I only took a few pictures this time but I'll have to post them at a later date as they're on my brother's camera and I'll have to wait until he downloads them to his computer to send to me.

I'll get there eventually.

Got the pictures off my brother's camera today for the centre console work I did for the 'Rat. It's just a sheet of plywood cut to shape with the same carpet glued and stapled to it as the bashboard panel.

I think you were right the first time...
From the MOTers' Guide: "The inspection of rear fog lamps is confined to the one rear fog lamp which is required to be fitted to the centre or offside of vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1980."
