Are they not legal on very old or classic cars? Or are they for show or off road use only like brush script number plates?

They are legal for cars up to 1972 or 73. My first Fiat was a K-reg (1972) 124 Sport Coupe with reg number LMF124K and I fitted it , legally, with silver on black plates.
The rules changed for cars the year or so newer.
No idea if my old coupe is still going - probably melted down to make a Seat!
