Should the battery on my Seicento be fastened down or does it just sit on the tray?

should be bolted down with a brace. guess someone got lazy when fitting a new battery... they can be a pain.

As above. You could probably make up a better holding mechanism with bungee straps!

The cars passed an MOT on the 20th April (I bought it on the 27th).
it should've failed on that. did you buy from a garage? go ask them about it

it needs to be held down. i would ratchet strap it down for now. if you brake hard for some reason there is nothing (other then the cables) stopping the battery flying forward where it can short on the bonnet or somewhere and cause a fire

Another job gets added to the list.
As stated the standard brace is can be real pita to deal with. What I've done on my N/A is bolt a hat shaped piece of ally bar to the bottom of the battery tray then drill & tap the ally then simply bolt the standard clamp to this. The top clamp could easily be replaced with a length of angle.

I found the brace bar it's mounting hooks in the spare wheel well but the nuts and washers are missing.

That's a good idea although I doubt I'll be replacing the battery in the near future as it's brand new.
