Anyone know for absolute sure what hand thread the bolt is that holds the sprocket on the front balancer shaft? I need to change the bearing that supports the cambelt. I've managed to turn it almost a flat anticlockwise but it's still very tight. Turned it back a little, no change. Now I don't want to apply any more force until I know it's going the right way. If the thread strips it's Goodnight Vienna.

Took your advice and asked at a dealership. They said anticlock i.e. normal thread but I got the feeling they weren't that familiar....I asked if there was a special tool to lock the balancer shaft while you tried to undo it and they said no. I found that suspicious as it seems to me Fiat have a special tool for emptying ashtrays. Given the trouble I've had holding the shaft without damaging the toothed drive, I'm nervous to take their advice on face value. I'll try and get another opinion. Normally I wouldn't be too bothered but if I get it wrong it's an engine out job to change the shaft from what I can see..

Of course they won't be familiar! I'd be suprised if they even knew there was such as thing as a Sedicivalvole, let alone worked on one!

If you can give a call to Walkers garage in Northallerton, or any other Lancia specialist. They should be working on these engines every day in Lancia Deltas so should know. As you say its not worth the bother if it goes wrong

I'm not sure if Sedicirich took the sprockets off his balancer shafts when they were locked on his racing engine.

Counter balance shaft locking bolt is definately an ordinary thread. Only the crankshaft pulley is left hand thread.

Another opinion it is! Thanks for the input Guys, I'm feeling more confidant about this now. Unless I get home early one day this week I'll have to wait for the weekend to get some daylight, but I'll post back what happens...

Good news, It's off and it WAS a RH (Standard) thread as you said Sumplug (y)

Bad news, it was so tight I have damaged the teeth on the drive sprocket getting it off, in spite of protecting them with a jubilee clip (n)

At least I don't have to have the engine out, so overall it's a :)
