I noticed within my glove compartment there is a punched sticker showing a Renew date of the "Gas canister" which releases the Passenger front Air Bag. This states to renew it in October 2013, which just so happens to be 10 years after being installed in the car during manufacture. I assume this date relates to all of the air bags in the car.

OBVIOUSLY i am more than keen to make sure all my air bag's are fully operational, and i will be looking into this again in 2013... so are YOU aware of the gas canister's renewal date's in your car???

Fiat Stilo's manufactured in 2001 according to MY renewal date should be due for renewal in 2011, so make sure your aware of it! Best to have a look and check, Comments welcome.

To be quite honest i think i would sell a car rather than have the expense of replacing airbags as i don't think it would be a cheap job.

And do you really have to replace them, Whats the reality of the bags not going off in a accident if you don't change them??

Very true... I reckon it's more to do with the manufacturer not wanting to be sued by someone if one of the thousands and thousands of airbags they've fitted doesn't deploy...

Wel if it costs more than the car in 2013 i'll look at getting a new car, but i'll rather make sure its safe than chance it.
Umm... the chances of your air bags not working safely if the gas canisters are not compressed to a safe enough pressure is pretty high lol

Check out the Fiat Stilo Crash Test i found on youtube:

It's good to make sure and see how safe you are with those babies working propperly (y)

I couldn't agree more, Those side impacts looked very severe didn't they.

I was surprised how the car held up in all of those crashes.

But i still say that unless the air bags were cheap enough to replace then the car would have to go as i really don't think its what you would call a serviceable item and if there is only a 10 year shelf life then why don't the manufactures replace them free off charge??

But having said that what is the average life span of a car nowadays.

Yea i thought the Stilo performed propper good, it sure has made me have more confidence for ever being in a crash!

So shall we agree that the conclusion to this thread is.......

When your Air Bag Gas Canisters are due for renewal... GET ANOTHER CAR!?! lol

10 years is standard recomendation for all manufacturers for airbag replacement.
There is no compressed gas in the gas canisters. They are a chemical reaction gas generator.

Many old airbags have been tested and no one has found a problem with airbags that are 15 years or older. They still detonate perfectly.

Replacing all the airbags in a Stilo would be over £1500 and is absolutely pointless.

If you want to avoild the issue, never own a car more than 10 years old.

Airbags (filled by a chemical/pyrotechnic device btw) are not the only safety equipment. Any 10 year old car also has worn seatbelts and supension/brakes etc, and it's shell survivability will be behind the newest models. So don't wait until October 2013, your safety is compromised now! Go buy a new Volvo immediately, have it dealer-serviced and replace it every three years.

What's that? You can't afford it? Well in that case you need to be pragmatic about the cost/risk balance which is acceptable to you. Given your expert technical insight ('the chances of your air bags not working safely if the gas canisters are not compressed to a safe enough pressure is pretty high lol') this shouldn't be too hard.

What a load of crap. Volvo are not the only leading safety manufacture, Infact Toyota are imo.

Who had the first knee airbags, and even the new rear impact airbag :chin:

Well i for one aint ready for my pipe and slippers yet so that discounts the volvo in my eyes thanks.

I think most modern cars in the last 10 years are fairly safe and its only if your hit by something large and heavy and or very quick you might be in trouble and a volvo i feel is not going to be much better in that case.

I created this Thread to make other people aware that MY "chemical/pyrotechnic device" was due for replacement in 2013 and that comments were welcome.

If you haven't noticed, this section of Fiat Forum consists of Stilo's from 2001 and look around we have cars from 2003, 2004, even a 1993 classic panda. alot of people reading this have cars older than 3years unlike yourself by the sounds of it.... so your in the wrong neck of the woods.

I plan to get myself another car when the cost to fix it out weighs the cost of the car itself... this has already decided what i plan for the future. When i get my pipe and slippers i'll join the Volvo band waggon.

Who's this aimed at

lmfao!!!!!!

toyota have to be cause you sure as hell cant stop :D

So true :p

The airbags are guaranteed to work (providing the system is operational) for ten years from fitting, that is, if they have a signal sent to them by the ecu they are guaranteed to fire. After ten years the airbags still work, but the manufacturer cannot guarantee they will deploy 100%, so there is a tiny chance they may not fire.

when i car gets to 10 years old most things will be past their best before date. as well as my new bravo i have a 2001 pug 306 and if im going to be honest, in the past i have had some pretty nasty bangs in other cars and the airbags were not activated... and i survive so it doesnt really worry me
