I have an "ebookman" I got for a few pounds off ebay which I use to read books and not much else, the mp3 is rubbish compared to my actual mp3 and the games entertain me for a few minutes. I hate the way people look at you when you sit there reading a book on the train on your PDA and people think you're just showing off or something. No internet on that ofcourse and awful support but I like putting 10 books on it when I am going places etc. Also good for revision notes. I have never used WAP for more than "wow, it works" but I guess an 18 year old with a simple life doesn't need it!
I am fairly clued up on the "BB revolution" being the person i am and it is unlikely much will give any major advances such as the mains version or satellite due to massive costs for some time. The most likely way we will sort out the problem is to have a lot more Ad-Hoc networking (or so I have read) in that we won't at all connect via a landline but use a wireless connection to another person etc. up to a wireless access point every so often. Doesn't sound efficient to me at all but it is an idea. Satellite is a great idea but as you have said, costs too much for individuals. The only way to make use of a satellite connection - and I believe this is done in some parts of the US? - is to buy a satellite connection between a large group of people then share it, either wirelessly or cabled. However, getting people within a rural area to do this isn't going to be too easy.
What happened with the phone systems? I guess BT at the time just accepted the cost and broadened access to as many people as possible. I guess we need a nationalised internet company! Or you could download one of those great programs that "INCREASE YOUR INTERNET SPEED BY 10x FOR £10" hmmmmmm!
Oh well, BB is good but needs to be made more accessible to work properly.
