Well Fiat is under huge financial debt aswell, lets just hope they design and build some lovely cars to boost sales.

coming from the midlands, Longbridge only 15 miles away, it will hit a lot of component companies very hard.
the factory next to where i work employs hundreds of local people. they make the dash's, door cards and parcel shelves for Rover and most of the other Midland car manufacturers.
i know i don't drive a Rover, but i will be sad to see them go.

I've got a Rover 600 and its great
I actually think their cars were pretty good, a nice alternative to some of the German marques. Admittedly their range was getting a bit old, but apparently they had a new range due to be released in 18 months.
I hope they are saved, a lot of jobs depend on it.

i hope that they find a buyer, i know that most of the cars are dated now but it's a british company going to the wall.
they should have done what all the forign company's do & say there moving to the far east as it's cheeper there then seen how much the goverment would have given them to safegard jobs, bit late for that now though.

I honestly think that they should just let Rover go. I know it will hit a lot of people really bad but there have been so many different people who have tried and eventually failed to save the Rover company... Loans from the government are just prolonging the inevitable.
BTW: i do actually live near Birmingham and the Longbridge plant.

I'd just like to point out that I was simply making an observation that the jokes were starting. Same with anything like this (anyone remember what NASA stands for?).
I for one am disappointed to see what is happening with Rover but unfortunately that is the way of the world these days. Big companies just get bigger (Hmmm, anyone see Tesco's results today?) and the little man gets squeezed out. Rover simply don't have the clout, quality or reputation anymore to survive in the mass production market.
I know that this means lots of job losses but the country just cannot afford to bail out ailing companies anymore. To support a manufacturer that is losing £25million a month just isn't feasible in the modern day. Not saying that I think this is the way it SHOULD be but just pointing out the facts.
Finally, I have recently been in a 75 and was really impressed at the opulance of the car. Unfortunately, I was not impressed with the build quality.
IMHO, British Leyland have got a lot to answer for here.

as was said earlier its going to affect a lot of smaller companies, i live near oxford yet there's still the likelyness that three or four companies will go under as they supply parts for rover. its not just rover cars they build engines for all sorts so knock on effects will be huge

i've also been in a Rover 75. when it was at idle, the revs kept going up 500rpm and dropping back to slow idle every 5 seconds or so. otherwise i was impressed.

lets face it, if it does get purchased by a company from china do you think they will keep the plant in the UK when they can build in China, india, turkey etc etc for a fraction of the labour costs, no unions, no HSE hassle and VERY willing workers! Most factory workers in india have degrees, they work on the shop floor hoping to be spotted and promoted. All they would want is the name, i can't understand why they have pulled out!
Yes a lot of people will be effected, but manufacturing in the UK just in not practical. They only way to get round it is to either wait until these less developed countries are forced to our standards regarding HSE & pay etc, impose a greater tax on imports or relieve corporation tax.
The US are not as tight as they were, but at one time it cost a fortune to import into the US to the point where it just was not possible. I cannot understand how the goverenment can let thousands of unqualified people into the country to join an already saturated jobs market and encourage people to have children by increasing child benefit yet not take some steps to protect jobs and entice other big industry.
In my opinion we need a strong government to kick the UK public and the country into line. Can you see a candidate, i cant!
