amp problem

i've been given a amp by a friend, but the problem is that it keeps protecting itself, anyone know why? or what can be done to fix it

has it been earthed properly

is the amp touching metal

it is most probably to do with the earthing of the amp to the car, make sure it is earthed to a good, clean, bare metal point of the car

I'm not an expert but my new amp suffered the same problem recently. Took it back to Halfords and they swapped it straight over, working fine now. What I do know though is that an amp protection light can come on for any number of reasons, if you cant figure it out just get a new one.
