General alternator faulty warning

stupid question time folks. I have a 53 1.9 diesel and drove through a puddle at speed last week. The alternator faulty warning came on immediately and is still on now. Battery power has died today but i did a load test and the battery appeared to be charginga couple of days ago. new alternqator time or is this a propblem other people have had that has a less expensive solution. Thanks in advance for any advice, i am not a mechanic by any stretch of the imagination but can do the basics.

check the wiring 1st - lightweight signal wire is crucial !!,

otherwise;
IF you can get to it,( usually a bit awkward)
unbolt the regulator / brush pack assembly, and swap with one from a scrappy,
the actual mechanics in the body of the alternator SHOULD be fine!,

Also, run your hands around the alternator casing and check for cracks. Have a read od this thread:
