What are most peoples thoughts on drilling an air box?

I know it wont give much more power/if any but its the sound im after.

Its the damage possibility that worries me.

Was just checking as i know some of the VW GTi's had a vacume sytem attatched to the air box so if you drilled it the engine would not run right.

Its going to be done on a *caugh* Laguna 2Ltr *caugh* :D

the vacuum lines will be connected on the ENGINE side of the first/primary air filter element. you should NOT drill or make anyholes on the engine side of element otherwise, whats the point in having a filter.

Right in terms of *damage* you may find that on a cold morning (if you remove hot air feed aswell, usually comes from a metal duct that feeds from under exhaust manifold) it will not run great, and when you accel from say <2000rpm the engine will *stumble* where instead of it picking up, it backs off, then picks up.
you might also find your fuel economy could go down (although it would be so neglagable that a feint breeze going the other way to driving would counter it)
and it makes a lot of noise,
SOMETIMES, you may actually loose power at the bottom end, but gain a bit at the top, its all trial and error,

I would suggest going to a scrappies and buying an airbox that fits your car and engine (model doesn't usually matter, but engine size and TYPE does) and then modify that, try it on ,and if its pants or you find its affectinging your engine adversly put your std one back on (y)

Oh and a battery dremel with a cutting bit does the job great

Cheers faster4_tec, nice info.

I was planning on getting a "spare" just in case, and i do have a dremel (or cheap alternative)(y)

What about hole sizes?

As its the sound im after, do more small holes or less large holes work best (or the same)?
If its the same its all good as im thining of putting a pattern into in then meshing with some thin filter material behind (just so you cant see straight through).

inch, to inch and a quarter I would reckon, with about an inch between each,

you don't need to put anything behind aslong as you don't breach the primary panel filter. if you put anything in there then it will have no effect to anything

this is my sisters-

best to do holes about 1.5c-2cm imo

How would it sound with a large section cut out and then meshed for apperance? Ow would it mess up the sound due to resonacne?

the sound is the resonance!!

remove your airbox totally, just leaving throttle body open, start it, let it warm up, then play:slayer:

sounds mint, but soo loud that everyone will hear you car trying hard and still not going anywhere quick:rolleyes:

don't bother meshing it, not as if you are going to be showing people your grotty fiats engine bay anyway:cool:

if your cough's sound like caugh, then I think you need to see a doctor(y)

:p

And the reason im thinking about meshing it is because im going to do a pattern or writing instead of just holes. As my car is silver, mesh will complement it. The engine bay isnt anything special but its nice and clean and will soon look nicer.(y)

Bugger, bugger, bugger.

After all my ideas i went to checkout the engine bay to see what would look best.

Answer...none.

The top side of the airbox is the engine side, and therefore can not be altered. (n)

Now ill look for a induction kit, but think it will be hard to find one. :(
