right i'm running a itg foam airfiter, would this be the best one or would fitting a pipercross or a k& n custom be better? or am i better off modding the engine cover to let a bit more cold air in?
 
The ITG filter is excellent (as the others - swapping wouldn't make much difference) but you need to clean it occasionally (go to ITGs website for information - http://www.itgairfilters.com/content2.asp?section=cleaning)

The airflow on the engine cover isn't so much a case of letting cool air in as getting hot air out! The trick is to remove the inner slats except directly over the engine to avoid the ignition system getting soaked in a downpour and the plug wells filling up.

I've got this to do, plus I've wrapped my ANSA exhaust , and that keeps the heat soak down a fair bit .
