I just bought an used Brava 1.6sx from late 1996. I didn't test the ABS brakes when i bought it, but the seller said it had ABS.
I tried the brakes today and the ABS does not kick in - it just blocks.

Is there any EASY way to check if the car is fitted with ABS brakes without taking anything apart? There isn't any lights in the dashboard lighting up, but i guess it might be a blown fuse or something?

Thanks!

my p plate does not have abs,i think it was an extra cost option when new.with the ignition on an abs light should come on.on start up after a few seconds the light should go out after the preasure is pumped up.if the warning light is on the system is faulty.fiat or a dealer plug in a laptop and can tell u the fault.if you have no light, then some 1 may have taken out the bulb to hide a fault/bulb gone/or no abs fitted.if abs equiped look at fuses or relays to see if fitted.gaps mean no abs.

Hmm... Just found out that it is fitted with ABS and had the error codes read from the ECU. It seems that there was an error with the sensor on one of the wheels. It looks like the previous owner had removed the ABS lamp in the dashboard.
Appearantly the same thing was done with the Airbag lamp - one of the seat sensors was malfunctioning - guess it was done to make it pass the equivalent to a MOT here in Denmark.

Getting it fixed next week.

the lengths people will go to to sell a car, its disgusting, th eguy i bought my car from lied his arse off and ne said he never had the red key but agreed to nock £300 off the price. i went down to my local fiat dealer in derby and they cloned a new key from my blue one but with a new immobiliser code in the chip, they then wiped the immobiliser and set the new key as the master key and cut me another key to use as an everyday key. it cost £50 in total for 2 keys and a reporgrammed immobiliser. I later found out that the bloke i bought my car off did still have the red key and i caught him with a cctv camera next to my house trying to steal the car back. he couldnt steal it as it wouldnt start so he locked the car and left, at the time it was very annoying and i went to the police but now i just laugh my boll*cks off thinking about it

Hmm... the guy i bought the car from didn't have the red key either... ;-)
Better put up a webcam in the garage ;-)

yes thought it maybe a censor.i had a granada once they always needed the censor taking off and cleaning, the trouble was you have a 1 in 4 chance of getting the right 1 off 1st time.sods law will always say its the last 1 you do.great system when working though.

yeah, i already had a check done by the AA, the day i went to look at the car and went back the previous afternoon to buy it. the checks from AA are brilliant, they tell you how many accidents it has been in (if any insurance claim was made) and tell you a detailed description of the car, you just give them the chassis number and they tell you the registration etc, not that im racist but i bought the car off a towel head so i had to be sure it was legit before parting with the cash.
