Hi,

I have been visiting this forum for some time now so a quick thank you for all the posts thats helped me! Recentaly solved the "Airbag Failure" problem from fiddling with some wires but now a different problem!...

Today/this evening i randomly get "Gearbox Failure" messages on the dash. There doesnt seem to be anything actually wrong with the gearbox although on 2 occasions it would not want to come out of Neutral!!

On one occastion it did not want to go above 2nd gear but putting it in Auto and accelerating to the red line made it change up..then eventually it decided to start working again.

The warning comes and goes and from what i have read on this forum this warning is often caused by water getting to a sensor/connector? This would make sense as its been horrible wet weather today!

My question is...Where is this dodgy sensor/connector? What needs to be done with it?

Thanks in advance for anyone willing to help!!

Adam

re: Abarth - "Gearbox Failure" message

Any body?

Its driving us mad!

It works absolutly fine then suddenly it will throw a hissy fit and not want to change up in manual or auto but will if i take it to the red line in auto and changes fine.

Brake lights seem fine.

It works for miles and miles then suddenly it will just decide not to work any more.

I had a look in the wheel arch and looks like its already been bodged with a bag, i hand dried it and sprayed it with WD40 and it was fine for around 50 miles before it started again. Then after a few more miles it worked fine again.

Grrrr:bang:

re: Abarth - "Gearbox Failure" message

I had the same problem for about two months getting a gearbox failure message and the car will only drive in 1st 2nd and having to redline it to make it change into 3rd

I had the car hooked up to a examiner and it came back as a "Clutch Disc Speed" Its a sensor which if i can remember cost about £40-£50, think it must of got wet or something.

What you really need to do is get it connected up to a examiner or fiat diagnostic software and you can tell exactly what the problem is, lets just hope its not your selespeed pump which is on the way out like mine, which die last week:bang:

Adam,

I also have had Gearbox Failure messages on my Abarth and the problem with my Abarth was relating to the brake light switch. Perform a search on the forum an you will see loads of problems relating to this pesky switch.

I would advise that you follow these steps to see if the brake light is indeed the problem...

1. Calibrate your existing brake light switch, take a look at the Stilo Guide called "Brake light problems" and the excellent thread called "Brake Light Switch Replacement" by jDeckchair5 for more info.

2. Use diagnostic software to check what the error message is? you can do this yourself if you got a laptop and buy the right cable on eBay for around £10. See the sticky thread called "FREE Fiat diagnostic software" for more details.

3. If the error message is the "brake light(pedal) switch" then replace the switch, a new part should cost around £10. Again refer to the the Stilo Guide called "Brake light problems" for more info.

Hope this helps you as much as it did me!!!!

Hi, thanks for the replies.

I have tested the brake lights by looking in a reflection and pressing it 20+ times and everytime it worked fine. Do you get any other warning lights?

I have had a look at the block of wires in the wheel arch and tried squeezing the connectors on the sensor in the gearbox but it keeps coming back!

Disconnecting the battery makes it dissapear for quite a while though it usually comes back worse momentarily!

On a couple of occasions it hasnt let me out of N but then i can leave it for a few mins and it will be fine.

Also had a couple of times where it has stalled on me.

I have also checked the oil level in the container by the battery and topped that up.

I have booked it in to Avanti Autos on Saturday so hopefully they can find the fault. Hopefully its just a dodgy sensor. They also seemed most reasonably priced (£30+vat rather than £60 and £70+vat which is what is charged more locally!)

When open drivers door, do you hear healthy sound 4-9sec building up presure or your pump stuggle to make presure up. If so problem maybe in highpressure valve, it can be easy damadge if your oil level is low. Valve is not so expensive, but better fint new type made for Alfa nad not for Fiat. It is bigger and better and it can fit in Stilo.

Ok got it diagnosed and 2 errors are there. First being the clutch disc speed, second being somthing to do with Acoustic somthing or other.

The clutch disc speed sensor...i phoned up a motor factors and asked for one of those and i was told its a crankshaft angle sensor and its £30+vat. Is that right? If so he can get it in for today and i can strip the car a little tomorrow to see if that cures it!

Thanks

Right, i have done some digging around and have found a sensor which has been pointed out on this forum before as being the sensor that reads the clutch disc speed.

Ive got the part number of 46527833.

Trouble is all it says it is is "Sensor". It doesnt actually say what it is and i have phoned Fiat up and thats all they can tell me. They want £53+ vat for it.

Are Fiat the only people who would be able to get that in or will other companies be able to by giving them the part number?

This is the Sensor i believe - Number 12
