Not sure if its just mine, but we where selling AA Tow Ropes for 25p each.

Believe it is this one.

Might be worth checking the petrol station as well as thats where I got mine from.

As Ash said, Needs to be a solid bar by law, I'm a bit stumped why the AA would endorse or sell this.

tow ropes are for emergency use only for example if the car has broken down a short distance from somewhere. they are not for moving cars any real distance, especially not on motorways. not sure if they are forbidden on motorways, but common sense is not to use on them in certain situations.

unless theres been a very recent change in the law....

For 25p it will be handy, for example if your car gets stuck in mud/snow.

Tow ropes aren't illegal.

This is from the Police National Legal Database:

"When the vehicles are attached solely by a rope or chain, the maximum distance allowed between the vehicles is 4.5 metres.

If the distance between the two vehicles exceeds 1.5 metres then the rope or chain must be made clearly visible within a reasonable distance from either side to other road users. This is usually done by tying a coloured flapping cloth in the middle of the rope or chain.

The person in the broken down vehicle must be a qualified driver as he is actually driving the vehicle. A further point is that if it is dark then the broken down vehicle must have its lights on as it would under normal circumstances."
And from the Road Vehicles (construction and use) Regs 1986

Where a trailer is attached to the vehicle in front solely by means of a rope or chain, the distance between the trailer and that vehicle :

1. Shall not exceed 1.5 metres unless the rope or chain is made clearly visible

2. Shall not exceed 4.5 metres in any case.
Also, tow ropes are RIGHT now being used by HATO and Police Forces up and down the country.

If you passed your test after Jan 1997 then you are resteicted on the weight of the vehicle you can tow (unless you have passed a towing course)

Its ALSO worth noting, that any vehicle you tow must fall within the towing weights which a) you are allowed to tow, and b) your vehicle is legally allowed to tow.

Unless moving the vehicle from a dangerous place where it will have potential to cause an accident, but once this danger has passed towing must cease.
