ive been reading through the forums and ive found that bhp increases top speed so does torque get u to 60mph faster??? if so how do u increase it??? thanx 4 the help
It's a complex issue.
Boils down to BHP gives you top speed, Torque gives you acceleration.
Increase torque by better breathing, e.g induction, exhaust, porting, cam, chip
BHP is actually a calculation of torque and rpm, so if you increase the torque you will increase the bhp.
Maximum Torque and BHP are also accesible at various Rev's....
For example a 180bhp RX-8 reaches 180bhp at 6000rpm and 192lb/ft torque at 3000rpm / a 220bhp rx-8 reaches 200bhp at 5500rpm but 183lb/ft torque at 2500rpm.
The 180bhp car will have a slower acceleration time, but because of it's higher torqe at lower revs, it will pick up speed quicker in lower gears at lower revs, but max out at a lower rpm than the 220bhp car, which will keep on going....
Ok i just so totally made things worse didnt i....
Basically the more torque at lower revs, the more accesible acceleration is, and the less you have to rev the car like a bitch! For example the 1.2 16v Punto reaches peak torque at 5000rpm, so to get the supposed 0-60 time of 11.5 seconds, you'd have to hammer it around in 3rd all the time
