After spending all weekend farting around with my Cinq & trying to sort out various problems, I discovered an previously unseen problem which could be affecting many people with either lowered Cinqs or Seis. When scurrying around under the car I noticed that my exhaust had a very noticable flat section just behind the cat & above the roll bar. From what I can see, after the bottom of my cinq had a rather intimate moment with a 'half' speed hump (only 5mph and gut wrentching at the time!), the anti roll bar had slammed up into the exhaust & and had flattened the pipe to point of being almost completely sealed up!I removed the front section of the zorst & saw that where the pipe had been flattened at the bottom (to about 1/3 its normal dia), the top of the pipe also had a 2-3 inch hairline split running along it. After welding up the crack, & reshaping the pipe with a 5lb mallet & plenty of swearing, it now resembles something a little more similar to its original form... though its far from perfect.
The reason Im writing this post is that prior to me noticing this damage to the exhaust, my car had been running like a piece of sh*t, backfiring in the carb, hesitant acceleration, low fuel economy, no 'grunt' etc, etc. The reason appears to be that with the exhaust gases not being able to flow & exit freely, there was a massive back pressure being created in the system which was effectively acting as a pressure brake on the engine. Since sorting the exhaust the car feels smoother, more responsive & has no backfiring in the carb.
If you have a lowered Cinq & any of the above symptoms check the exhaust just behind the cat & above the rollbar. The answer to your problems could be simpler than you think!!!
Cinquecento............Its not the size its how you use it!
