i have a w - Reg brava with a nackered engine, today my mate wrote his 01 - Reg brava off, they are both 1.2 16v, but engines look slightly different, do you think that if his engine is salvageable that it will work in my older brava ?

yes.
retain your inlet manifold etc, just swap the head and block over, and all should be reet.
does the 51 plate have the cat up near the manifold? does yours? if they differ, the stud pattern on the exhaust manifold may differ too and you'll need some jiggery pokery to make it fit.
