Basically i'm to lazy to search all the way through the DVLA site so a quick question.....

Can I ride a 125cc motorbike on just a full car licence as my CBT has run out?

Oh and I passed my test after 2001 when the changed a load of the laws.

Thanks (y)
Jamie

no

EDIT:

Let me expand my answer... You need a valid CBT if you passed your driving test after/during 2001, unless of course you have a bike license... you can't even ride a 50cc scooter.

You used to be able to ride up to 125cc on a full driving licence, but they changed it because of the speed 125cc bikes became capable of. At that time, if you had a provisional licence you were automatically provisional for cars and bikes, so at 16 you could ride a 50cc and at 17 a 125cc. When you obtained your full car licence you kept your provisional entitlement for bikes.

Now, as previously stated, you have to apply for the CBT licence, which is in essence the same as the provisional entitlement on the old licence, but the DVLA get to take more money from people.

Exactly bloody annoying as i used to hace a CBT... But still need to get one again cos i'm gonna wait till my 21st birthday to do my Direct Access....

The main reason in the question was that i got offered a v.nice DT125 for dirt cheap and i've fancied another a bike for a while.......

I think the reason is they don't want people riding around on CBT's because they're only meant to be a provisional stop-gap for a proper bike licence.

Is it right that you can't ride a bike without a CBT or a bike licence whether you have a car licence or not but if you have a car licence you can take the test without doing the CBT first?

I think the CBT idea is a load of crap. Because i passed my test before Jan 2001 i didnt need a CBT to ride my moped or L plates or anything, yet if i want to ride anything bigger I need a CBT - apart from performance, there is no difference in riding any bike, but isnt that the same with cars??

How about, if you pass your bike test, you can drive a car up to 1000cc. If you want to drive up to a 1400cc you need a CBT and L plates, but if you want to drive anything bigger than 1400cc, you need to either hold a full driving license for 2 years or you need to be over 21.

^^^^^^is this the future??^^^^^^^^

There is some correlation between bikes and cars, but large bikes easily out perform almost all cars. You can buy a second hand bike for under £2000 that will out perform most supercars, so it is hardly a direct comparison. Cars are also generally considered to be safer than bikes, I know there are bikers that may contest that, but in most situations and accidents a car would be safer.

As far as performance being the only difference between bikes, again that is not strictly true. A big heavy bike requires skill in dealing with the weight that is not required on a smaller bike. An example would be someone who has just passed their bike test taking a GN1500 off it's centre stand and dropping it, then realising they can't pick it up again.

But once again age comes into this all again

As you can pass your full bike test at 17 yet still only be allowed a bike of up to 33bhp but if you were older say 30 and pass your test you can go out and get the biggest bike you can afford..........

So looks like a 3year wait till my 21st then :(
