Considering upwards from 11,000 people, many in awful circumstances have died I personally want to say I am so very sad :(

The world's largest earthquake for 40 years caused a Tsunami (tidal wave) some 30ft high (think your house plus a bit really).

If anybody feels they would like to donate towards the short term and long term relief aid the countries involve will need, the Red Cross is probably the best bet at the moment:

Yes I saw this on the news this morning and it looks awful, especially when so many of these rural and island communities are going to be in places where aid etc. cannot get to them. It's not been a very merry christmas for some :(

Without wanting to sound callous, it's natural selection at work. Every so often a natural disaster occurs which effectively culls the worlds population. It's life...

It could be our turn next...
I see what you are saying but 11000 people is hardly a dent on the worlds population

Steve, I am not sure if this meets the definition as natural section in anyway whatsoever. Natural selection (AFAIK) is about the superior people living and the inferior dying, i.e. the better hunters living better than the worse hunters.

This on the other hand is nothing like that....

I don't believe that the world's population (as Joe as hinted at) has ever be controlled by events like this.

Upwards of 50,000 people have now been confirmed dead.

Paul, that's my opinion. Feel free to a) be offended by it or b) ignore it.
Steve you are welcome to your opinion it did not offend me ( even if it did, its your own opinion) 50000 people dying is still a great loss to the world anyway you look at it.

Please guys, I have just got really upset watching the news and there's simply not enough aid/money available. There's possibly 100k (Or more!) dead - possibly the largest natural disaster of our life times. The battle for survival for people out there is possibly worse than the actual event. Approx 5 million people are at risk.

The figures talked about so far are limited, people need to come together and just donate a little, please, I am seriously "begging" you to just give a few pounds.

You know how little I like spending (maybe anyway) but even I am about to make a donation. It only takes a few minutes but could make all the difference.

Examples of kind donations I heard about on the radio:

JCB offfering $1m of trucks to help out
Scottish water is flying over fresh clean water

Please, even if it's just a few pounds.

Remember the areas involved aren't as economically developed as here.

Thank you Stu :)

I know we all think "others will deal with it" but is that next CD/DVD/set of neons REALLY worth more than somebody's life?

This time I don't think others will deal with it and all of us can help to make a difference. 15 million was offered by our government, 15 million? That's less than we give a week to the lottery isn't it? This is a worthy cause....

I thank anybody you does make the effort.

I actually already donate a lot of stuff to the local Red Cross shop, but that is purely by chance - they have an out-of-town shop, and parking is relatively easy! All the other charity shops are just too inaccessible around these parts.

Im taking back my Christmas pressy from my wife tomorrow ,so i can put the money back in the bank after the whole thats just been left.
Seeing that guy carrying that Dead baby was shocking.

i've not seen a lot of the footage on the news as i've not been at home, but was reading through the papers today and it really hit me how much devastation has gone on, ive donated what i can - its not a lot, but if every gives a little it'll make a lot and hopefully go some way to making a difference
