Technical 55s 96 model wont go into 1st gear??

Could anyone help? Ive got a punto 55s 96 model and when I stop and try to put it into 1st it wont do it, it is stuck in neutral I have to switch the engine off then put it in first, not very good when your at traffic lights!! its not the clutch had that checked.

sounds something to do with the gearbox then might not be serious could just need oiling.
