i just bought a punto 1.2 60s
its just not quick enough and cant aford the GT
my dad has a spare engine in the garage and though i could drop it in
does anyone know what i need to drop a 20vt lump in ma punto

is this a **** take? :confused:


if you cant afford the gt how are you going to afford to make the 20vt fit? you will be looking at about 5 grand+

If you need to ask, I wouldnt attempt it. Off the top of my head and without seeing the engine, custom driveshafts, mounts, all the loom, ecu, and basically a sh*tload of knowledge. Its not an easy thing to do, and will take a LOT of time, and a LOT of money.
 
I was thinking of dropping an HGT engine in mine too , but it really isn't worth it.As presaid you actually need to transform the whole car.Suspension , Transmission , Brakes , ECU , Probably your dashboard won't work after the conversion cause it's possible that the engine's ECU won't cope with the car ECU or sth like that(that's a fact but I don't know if I explain it right-not very good at the mechanic department) , strut braces , clutch.I can't think of anything else right now but there definetely is more.Also , you may have to change some of your steering parts.As a result , you'll end up having spent a fortune for the stuff(I suppose your dad will do the conversion , or else you shouldn't even have thought about it) , for the insurance and owning a car that will never be as reliable as the one you have now.See , in order to produce a car an industry has to make a lot of tests and research etc etc and that's why the development of a new model begins when the old one comes in the market and takes many years.Doing this conversion will be like making a car on your own , thus exchanging these years and mechanical knowledge of a car industry with your own.Making a car isn't just taking the parts and throwing them into a platform..So my oppinion is , don't do it.
Save some money in order to buy a normal , ready powerful car.
 
Sth more..Does a 2 litre engine even fit a punto MK2??Max size it came with was 1.8..

I think you're right, the Coupe may have an extra valve on it, you might even have to cut sections out of the Punto engine bay to get it in even ?
Too much hassle IMO, plus CFREITAS if you did go through all that hassle (and money) would you keep it and continually chuck cash at it nursing/maintaining it ?, or if you sold it after what kind of re-sale value would you expect to get?
Not even enough to buy a round of Pizzas I'll bet? :p

Have you thought of a re-map? might be cheaper plus traditional tried and tested things like uprated sports exhaust and a decent air induction kit ?

Don't know how old you are, but if you start saving now the money you would have invested in this Punto, 1-2 years you'd be able to afford to buy something like a Panda 100hp or a 500 Abarth? which I'm sure will be a lot more affordable by then if the insurance does not kill you ;)

The 60S will be the mk1. The Coupe 16VT can be made to fit, with enormous expense and knowledge, but I know of only two people that have made the 20VT fit, and they had to actually cut parts of the chassis and do all sorts of structural welding and custom part fabrication. Definitely not worth it.
 
Fun to try if you like a challenge but dont expect cheap insurance (for anyone of any age) or a reliable car. That's if it works at all, cars these days work as a package** swap one chunk about and it all goes pear shaped.

**The Fiat ECU hard coded to the keys is a good example - lose the keys and the ECU becomes a door stop.

You'd be better off building a Lancia Stratos replica. Probably no change from £30,000 but at least there are only a few hundred on the road. BTW the replicas are better made than the originals. Not "quite" the same - but close. :)

Yes it has been done. I believe the guy that done it was a mechanic did most of it himself but still needed a pro to do some work. Required work on the sub frame and cross member to fit the engine in. and even once it was in the turning circle was huuuge.

Stop dreaming and get a better job or wait a couple of years and buy a GT / HGT.
