Hi All. Looking to change the gearbox oil as its a newish car to me and I don't know it's history. I have found a supplier of correct oil but how much do I need. My hand book covers both 2x4 and 4x4 and seems to suggest very similar oil capacities which seems odd as the 4x4 has a transfer box ! Hand book says something like 1.6lt 2x4 and 1.7kg 4x4. I found a video on an older model that suggested 1.7lt 2x4 2.7lt 4x4.

Has anyone done this job and if so did you buy 2 or 3lts of oil ?

Any guidance appreciate.

Buy 3ltrs with the proviso you can return some, measure what you drain out of it and add the same amount of new.
Sounds like a plan. Only issue is I can't find a local supplier so has to be an online purchase. Probably by the time I pay postage and account for time taken to go to post office I may as well just keep 1lt in stock.

In mine (a MJ 4x4) the transfer box is separate and has its own - and different - oil. So the capacity of the main gearbox will be the same. On the older (2005-12) 4x4 the rear drive was contained in an extension to the main gearbox housing and shared the oil. Sounds like the video was referring to that. Note: The rear axle uses yet another oil spec, so that’s three different fluids in total.

Here’s what my handbook shows - but note mines a diesel with a five-speed gearbox. The ‘Drive transmission idler unit’ or PTU is the link between the gearbox and the prop shaft. I suppose it’s possible with the TA the drive comes direct from the gearbox(?) as the handbook makes no mention of the PTU on the page for the TA specs?
