just been to look at a 2002 jtd with 58k on the clock, i realise the belt needs to be done at 72k but if i bought it would change it at around 65k, my question is this a DIY job?? any guides?? or should i pay a garage to do it, if so how much roughtly am i looking at to get the belt & tensioner done?

im not scared of getting my hands dirty maintaining my cars but im a bit wary of this because it will be the newest car i have owned and dont know how simple fiat made it on the newer engines :)

thanks

i know fiat changed the milage for changing timing belts on the mk2 on teh petrol they changed it from 72k to 60k but people on her recomend changing sooner. i would imagine diesle is the same ??. dont know how much the diesel one costs to do though sorry. i know people on here do the petrols them selves.

In an Italian car specialist you are looking at about £200 for the cam belt and tensioner change along with a new water pump. Always worth getting the cam belt changed when you buy the car if only due to its age and for your peace of mind.

anyone shed any light on the cambelt mileage for a jtd, was it reduced in line with a petrol? thanks for the replies so far!

Not sure if the milage was reduced to 60K, but it's a brave person that chances a Fiat on the manufacturers cambelt change guidance. Do it as soon as you buy the car.

I was quoted £260 for mine (DBS Desira Hertford), but this was reduced to £100 because of warranty work to the idle tensioner required at the same time :D

My 2002 JTD's cambelt was done at the 60K service (@ 57,500 miles) when the car was 1 month short of 3 years old.

oh dear, so it looks as though the concensus is to get it done at the 60k mark....the car im looking at is up for £3,700 with 58k and full sh and 3 years warranty on engine, axels and gearbox. From looking at parkers the book is £3,335 assuming 30k, considering the cambelt needs to be done in the next few k and the car is in good nick and providing it drives well what would people recommend i offer, £3,500?

I got £2,250 for mine last summer (2002 JTD ELX with 61,000 miles, FSH, mint blah, blah blah) and I know it was up for £3,995; don't know what the buyer paid.

I would have thought your's is a touch overpriced although the warranty looks reasonable. Check it is parts and labour; not just parts and what ancilliaries it covers; the definition of engine often means 'the block'.

I'd go in at £3,200 and be prepared to pay £3,400 to take account of the cambelt change. It may even be worth paying a little more if they throw the belt change in for you (they can do it between other paying jobs so their cost is, essentially, parts and salary).

And before anyone calls me a muppett for getting so little, I got £1K off my car that was already at a steal of a price before haggling :p

i think i may go in at 3.5 with the belt change included and take it from there and hope i dont annoy the seller too much :)
