Hi
I have a 2002 motorhome with Fiat Ducato 2.8jtd engine 75000 miles on clock and it is smoking under load .
I changed air filter and did an oil filter and oil change also as this problem appeared before setting out on our 3000 mile trip of which we have now covered 2500 miles . Still puffs out a bit of soot . I agree could be injector related but I’m not getting any injector fault light on .
The engine sounds good whilst pulling , water temperature is normal under load and idle is good with no rattling noises . The engine has done 75000 miles so should be fine . The exhaust is looking very sooty / rich .
Any ideas please ? Also can anyone point me in the direction of obtaining a workshop manual for this make and year
Many thanks

It may be worth checking for air leaks etc. in turbo/hoses/intercooler etc.
If not getting enough air/oxygen then engine can run rich/sooty and low performance.
I think there is a pdf. somewhere on the Forum for Iveco Daily that use nearly the same Sofim engine (bottom end different due to RWD) etc.

Thanks I will check those hoses as it has felt. A little underpowered . 👍

Check the boost pressure your turbo might be on the way out.

Check inside the inlet manifold. You might need to unbolt the intercooler to engine pipe. You might have the head sooted up from EGR soot depositing where you don't want soot deposits. They can be cleaned by a specialist using with walnut shells cleaning systems.

Is the smoke black or blue? In my case it was the latter and was a knackered turbo.

Thanks but Definately unburnt fuel . I checked oil over journey of 4500 miles and level didn’t change also black puffs as opposed to blue

Have you remedied this fault, my 2008 ducato 2.3 Ltr has started black smoke from exhaust and had difficulty getting through the MOT. It’s only done 21000 miles all on long journeys. Would appreciate your comments.

If you can get underneath the motorhome check to see if the link pin between the turbo waste gate actuator and the lever arm on the turbo hasn’t sheared . It is a common failure Is the engine under power when pulling up hill and does the engine inky smoke when labouring ?

If black smoke then check as my earlier comment to OP
"It may be worth checking for air leaks etc. in turbo/hoses/intercooler etc.

In simple terms, black smoke on any diesel is either too much diesel or not enough oxygen/air.
In the absence of any error codes etc. I would first check you are getting enough boost from the turbo and that there are no air leaks to the manifold. I assume air filter side isn't clogged.

As a quick check look at the turbo Actuator lever arm it will give those symptoms if not attached to the turbo waste gate valve input lever . It it’s a common known fault on motorhomes as they sit around a lot and the pin corrodes and seizes eventually causing it to shear
