hey chaps,

just wanted to ask the question here. I am going to be adding 2 stroke oil to my 4x4 shortly, as my Terrano benefits from it. I wondered if the JTD would benefit form a bit of 2 stroke in the diesel at the correct ratio?

anybody tried it?

I use on occasion and have not had any adverse effects.

It may be a placebo with regards to keeping the high pressure pump, injectors, valves & rings clean but it works for 2 strokes.

I have no smoke from my exhaust at all!

exactly Peat.
Benefits are mainly lubrication. Essentially on my 4x4, which is an old diesel lump, I see less smoke, very slight increase in MPG and a quieter engine noise (though these are noisy engines to begin with) and of course better lube for the pump etc. Its like adding redex, except better and considerably cheaper...only use mineral though..the cheap stuff.

Never dared try it on a more modern diesel like the Stilo JTD...

ive been adding stuff for a few years usually a few hundred ml of 2 stroke plus something like millers or an injector cleaner.
i tested sound and vibration on 2 stroke and it wasn't just a placebo, its just about noticeable but variations in weather eg temp atmospheric pressure and humidity can also give variations day to day.
i found it seemed to give a slightly softer burn, no noticeable power increase(possibly a bit less) , no mpg gain to mention, but i don't do ideal trips as theyre too short.
i add mainly for the lubrication as i tend to run above maximum rail pressure so injectors and hp pump could benefit from any assistance.
ive also tried peanut oil this summer but i wouldn't recommend using it at this time of year as it goes like candle wax this sort of temperature.
this was the penut oil left in garage at about 5c to 10c it just solidified, ive been told it wouldn't/ doesn't when mixed into diesel but i didn't like the thought

this was a few tests at different ratios

this was after 5 hrs @ -12c

some others

different times different engine temps etc plus also egr cycles can drastically alter perceptible engine noise.
ive nothing to add on a downside , use mineral or semi synth only i think no fully synth 2 stroke.
i think ratio is around 200:1 recommended
will soon be trialling some pure cetane booster(2-ehn) to do some different mixes.
best you can do is try it, throw a 250ml bottle into a full tank of your normal diesel and see how it goes, next tank do just diesel notice no difference don't bother again, nothing harmed and nothing lost.
i also add the oil before the diesel so it mixes it well on the way in.

i run maximum rail pressure over 1700bar and i think the older jtd is max 1350bar so you should be safe enough to try.

Greetings!

I do use 2 strokes oil Jaso FB on my Stilo JTD.
It makes the engine quieter.

Cheers

yep jaso fb sounds familiar possibly fc definitely not fd.
here was a post when I was testing that peanut oil

I think this was the original post all forum referances I saw were linking to
http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic878.html

loads of 2 stroke users on jtd in alfaforum and astra cdti boys, but to be fair ive seen a few people try and not use again.

edit here was a fairly big thread on tdoc

also try a bottle of millers eco sport or diesel rhino which is cetane booster , lubricant and injector cleaner but youll pay more.

I put 2t in my 306 what worked wonders for the start up smoke and calmed down the hard acceleration smoke also. Don't use the red stuff though. Some explaining if you ever get the tank dipped by the police.

Have read about this sometime ago and having done the usual google to read up on it thought would give it a try.
Found Asda and Toolstation are best for price up in these parts which is the FB 2 stroke oil and even though red in colour this is not a concern even though tank dipping buy the customs folk is a common occurance round here, as the the small quantity is very diluted ,plus due to all the other additives on the market these days they do chemical reaction tests that only reacts to red diesel.
Anyways have not done a great deal of miles and even though I did feel it sounded quieter and a smoother drive thought was just trying to convince myself until when I was not thinking about it noticed that I now have the radio volume on a much lower setting than before adding the 2 stroke ( I do not wear a hearing aid either :) )
As it is also supposed to help clean certain parts of engine it will be interesting to see if this is so when it comes to egr cleaning time but have to wait till next year on that one in meantime I be adding it at rate of 50ml per 10 litres of fuel, found an old washing liguid cap that measures fluid up to 50ml which was handy then pour into an old redex bottle which makes easier to add into the filler cap. found this link below for mixture calculating. just change the ration box to 200 then enter amout of fuel though doing 50ml for every 10 litres is not rocket science.

All burnt oil, specially mineral oil, will leave ash and deposits....
Don't fool yourself by thinking it will not...
If you want a clean jtd engine, use the best quality fuel on the market, do regularly engine oil changes, and drive long distances with high speeds (=higher rpm's) on motorways.
And best advice for a clean engine: close the EGR !!!!!!

Very good if you happen to have a motorway on your doorstep but I sure ain't driving 100 miles down the A9 to the nearest motorway.
Sure be many views and closing egr be one of many so shall see next when the egr gets its annual spring clean nothing wrong with a little sensible experimenting in the meantime am sure Nicolas Joseph Cugnot came across many exclamations marks when he first invented the motor car..

Nothing wrong with regular maintenaance as in regular oil changes, in the 5 years I have owned my stilo it has 5 years of reular servicing, fingers n bits crossed no signs of anything changing the next 5 years...so case of each to their own on that one me thinks
