Can anyone tell me the procedure for removing and replacing the fan belt on the 2.0jtd engines - 2004 year? I don't know how the tensioner works.

Is the tensioner spring loaded or fixed? Will it automatically give the right tension on the belt, or do I have to set the correct tension? How would I set the tension? My vehicle (Scudo van) also has a/c if this makes a difference.

Apologies for basic questions. I've changed loads of fan belts before, but all on old stuff without tensioners. Thanks for any advice.

Hi mate,

Its a spring loaded auto tensioner.

Put a 15mm (iirc) spanner on the bolt in the middle of the tensioner pulley. Turn it anti-clockwise (as if undoing the bolt) and you will pull the tensioner away from the belt and the belt will go slack. Simply pull off the belt whilst still holding the spanner.

Be careful as they require a fair bit of force!

Replacement is reverse of removal, and it will automatically tension the belt.

Hope that makes sense

Alan

Hi Alan.

Yes, that makes perfect sense. Many thanks for taking time to give me some advice.

One other thing that may be related - a couple of years ago I started getting a slight metallic whine from the engine, that rises and falls with the revs. I thought it may have been to do with the cam tensioner, idler or even water pump.

Anyway, last month I had the cam belt and all of the above components replaced. The noise remains. How long do the fan belt tensioner pulleys last - and do they get noisy when the bearing wears?

Thanks again.

hi,
it's a moving part - with a bearing inside.. so can / will wear in time,

when the belt is off, (there should be enough room to test)
feel the bearing for rough running

briefly start + run the engine with belt well out of the way ( removed)

if the metallic noise is still there, then you've eliminated everything driven by the belt ( alternator, the idler pulley in question - etc)

Thanks Charlie. Had another look at the tensioner pulley today. There's a bit of sideways movement in it, so I suppose the bearing is worn. Will change that too.

well worth changing it while things are apart ( and the weathers good..!!)

Shouldn't really be on a Fiat site. It's my 1986 Carlton 2.2 CDi, the old shape - not the last 'jelly mould' incarnation. Had her a few years, but she's always been garaged, is low mileage and almost mint.

Quite rare these days - but not really worth anything. Unfortunately. There's an early chrome bumper 2000 in the background too, awaiting restoration.
