I am looking at changing my 1996 1.4 petrol gussling powerless Bravo for a 1.8 version. In Ireland these are the gt versions. I was looking at a 1998 HLX and was wondering if this is a mk1 or mk2 or is there such thing and if so what differences are there. The 1996 gt's are common enough but not the 1998 cars. I know the gt's became a 1.6 in 1999. Anyway i appreciate any advice you can offer. Looking at the bravo guide is it fair to say that if you don't thrash the 1.8 around then the fuel consumption is much the same as the 1.4.

Not sure of the spec of GT equivalent cars, but expect around 100 miles to a tenner, maybe a little more out of the 1.8 machine.

Thats fantastic (SARCASM) because i bearly get 100 out of my 1.6!

Paul,

I used to get about 110 miles to a tenner out of my 1.6.

I have recently "squeezed" 92 miles froma tenner out of my HGT. I had a 1.8 Marea that would do approx the same as the 1.6.

Strange, but true non the less. Maybe something to do with the 1.8 having a VVT motor?

Re: Re: Re: Re: 1998 Bravo HLX

the 1.8 doesnt have VVT, only in the Punto HGT, Barchetta and Coupe (on the continent). The difference between the 115 and the 130 is the VVT!

I get about 28mpg on average, but have got up to 34. The mk2 was introduced in March 99, so the one you are looking at is a mk1. Differences are minimal, colour coded headlight washers, nicer alloys, diffferent trim, digital milometer ...

Cheers for the advice, the 1.8 hlx seems by all accounts to be a hell of a better car than the 1.4.
Certainly will be more responsive

The HLX is a lovely car - I average pretty much spot on 30mpg (like anon, I have got up to 34/35, but it's soooo boring driving like that). It's geared very low, so you tend to shoot away from lights quicker than most: I don't try and drag-race away when the lights change (most of the time, anyway) but I still tend to leave most other things standing.

Any bravo is better than the 1.4 (well maybe for the exception of the TD75 -but you will get more MPG for sure)

:)
