General 1996 Brava 1.6sx power issues :(

My brava is very sluggish when accelerating, especially when using full throttle. power seems to finally kick around 4,000RPM, but is irregular and jerky. I suspect some sort of airflow problem as I don't have any warning lights on. Problem persists irrespective of engine temp, petrol level, and head gasket is fine.
Really frustrating because I know the car has a lot to give.
Any help much appreciated.

Try to clean throttle body first, see Guides/Stilo/... for instructions. Also check fuel and air filter. Change spark plugs if you did not change them for a long time. Measure resistence of injectors and ignition coils with mulimeter. Another problem coult be water in fuel tank or fuel filter or reduced fuel pressure.

tried fitting an uprated air filter which seemed to make the engine noise a little smoother so once I've worked out how to squeeze it into the cramped engine bay we'll see how it runs. Thanks for the help
