Technical 1979 1500, 5 speed - gear linkage help

Just got a 1979 1.5, the car won't engage 5th or reverse. Reading up, I am hoping it is the linkage rather than the gearbox. Could anyone enlighten me as to where to check/adjust, what the linkage all looks like and best ways to work on it?
Am I better under the car/inside the car etc.

There's not much to go wrong with the linkage itself, but for starters it's worth checking the securing bolt at the base of the gear stick is still tight where it joins the rod, also the flexi "lollipop" rubber under the car between rod and gearbox input selector isn't falling apart (enlisteing someone to wiggle stick in car whilst you view the link underneath is a bonus)...
