There will be no problem with scrubbing on a mk2 down 50mm on 17s as long as the ET is 35 or a bit lower.

I have 17's with 3mm spacers on the front and 3mm on the back and it's driving fine, no scrubbing. I have now lowered mine 35mm aswell and still no problems.

i just bought a set of wolfrace alloys for my mk1, but they're 15". I heard 17" do masses of damage to the car (think about going up hills with big wheels and a 1.1 - 1.2 engine).

Thing i want to know is, do you need to change bolt sizes with alloys?

no. you might need wobbl bolts if they are 4x100 pcd as fiats are 4x98
