Hi,

On my way home tonight my cam belt snapped:cry:, is this usually catastrophic?

I was travelling down a muddy lane on the brakes, as I let off the brakes it felt like the ABS cut in once then no power! I dipped the clutch and stopped. Before I could think of the cam belt I turned the ignition key, the engine turned but obviously no ignition. From what I remember, there were no funny mechanical noises.

Could I be lucky and have no bent valves or does that never happen with this engine?

Thoughts please,

Gareth.

Oh dear oh dear. Sounds bad. Are you sure it was the cam belt? Have you had the cover off to check?

If it was the cam belt then yes - it's usually catostrophic.

Yes, definately the belt, I looked behind the cover and spotted the frayed edge of the belt(n)

Any idea on how expensive this is going to be?

Cheers,
Gareth

The 125td is a 5 cylinder? With the extra width it makes the job harder for garages. You are looking at hundreds of pounds, possibly upto £1500 if the head needs removing, bent valves replacing and re-assembly.

I'm afraid its either find new car or really learn to love your Marea time :(
