Technical 1242 Block

the heads are the same, but for a punto75 eninge you'd need the head off the old engine as the 75 is mpi and the cinq is spi. the cam from the 75 would be nice to put in the spi head tho :D

the block is the main chunk of the engine tho really aint it, you can't really put it that in instead of swapping the engine. you are swapping the engine if u swap that!

Could you put this in an 1108 engine - instead of performing full engine swap?
Or am I missing something really obvious?
*hhhmmm*
Cheers,
Matt
The block is the bit that bolts onto the gearbox, and the head bolts onto the block. It's possible, I suppose - but it's easier to take the whole engine and 'box out and change things over before bunging it back in.

1108 and 1242 SPI heads are identical, I'm actually running an old 1108 head on the 1242 turbo.

Be aware that the Punto 75 head won't fit to the Cinq / Sei SPI intake manifold (probably the zorst too), the bolt spacing is all wrong. If doing a 75 / 60 / whatever hybrid have a word with Arseofbox - he knows first hand what will and what won't go.

pete; we were having discussion wether he could use all his high boost turbo 1108 kit with a 1242 block (and a modded 1242 sump with a bit modded for the turbo), to effectively have a 1242 high boost turbo if you get what i mean?

As long as you find some way of dropping the compression ratio, either with machined pistons, shorter rods or head gasket spacer (although I understand these are unreliable).

If you don't drop the CR it'll pink like mad and burst.

Very true Pete, I think that the head gasket spacers are not 100% fool proof, but if you were to go down this route I would consider getting stronger head bolts to gain more tension & even go as far as wire ringing the block, I don't know the full In's & outs of this but has been done for years on Renault 5 GT Turbo engines and Cosworth blocks as well running lots of boost to safe guard the gasket, think it is still used in rallying cicles if not other forms of motorsport.

But the best way would be proper lower compression pistons, which may prove to be expensive, but ultimately more reliable. :)

Aaron.

not sure if this may work i know the 1108 is shorter in height than the 1242 but if you put the 1102 conrods in the 1242 with the 1242 pistons the 1242 crank throw may take up the rest of the distance and give you the drop in compression you require

ah bugger! Thought you might be onto something there, Kev! Was all ready to strip the old 1108 down.... but trust Fiat to use different diameters on the crank pins on 1108s and 1242s - shame as the little ends look interchangeable.
I'd ideally like to drop the CR to 7.5:1 or thereabouts and run silly boost with a mappable ecu, but think I'd need forged pistons - which I believe may cost the thick end of £700 a set.

lol pete (i did say may work) only i did this on a old mini i had put 1100 conrods in a 850 :D, may be looking at other conrods out of a panda , uno may slove the problem

Matt...

The 1108 Inlet manifold wont fit on the 75 head, the studs are 15mm or so too far apart on the 75 head.
Also, the 75 exhaust manifold might look identical, but its not its 4-2 not 4-1 as on the Cinq. Best bet is to use the 1108 or 1242 SPi head with the 75 cam :D
