Technical 100hp rear damper options

For what its worth my 100HP had almost new Koni sports on it when i bought it and although the back is much better controlled they do still give a very hard ride.

Absolutely. The improve damping only helps to control the "pogo" effect - which was ridiculous! What has happened since you changed the springs??

I removed the original rear bump stops and fitted a much shorter type which has helped the ride quite alot.

Well there is certainly no 'pogoing' but the back end does seem to crash in to minor holes in the road much more than the front and to be honest nothing with fourty five section tyres and very short shock tubes is ever going to ride like a Citroen.

The original design of bump stop leaves very little rear suspension movement before it engages. Initial part of the bump stop is soft but once that is taken up it goes solid. I removed mine to increase the rear suspension stroke.

That's very interesting as I have a persistent clonk from the rear left suspsension that I just can't track down and mine has lowered springs.

OK the FK dampers arrived today. Both front and rear are manufactured in Germany. Quality looks Good but the proof will be in the driving I guess. I have a spare set of 100hp dampers to compare against and in just a simple hand test the damper rates seam very different. Bump rates in the 100hp parts seem quite strong rebound might be stronger in the FK's.

Yeah, my FK dampers came a couple of weeks ago, my 100hp is going to the garage today to get all four corners changed, and for a general suspension check-up.

I already know that one of the rear bump stops is loose, but I expect there will also be a few bushes need changing, possibly drop-links tightening up or replacing. If the bump stop can't be reattached, I'll possibly ask him to replace with the shorter diesel bump stops (?), or whatever he has, so long as they aren't any longer. The roads around here are awful this time of year, and speed bumps everywhere.

In the meantime, I'm borrowing an old MX5, 1.6 first gen with a wooden steering wheel. Doesn't feel as punchy on the accelerator as the Panda, but its very fun to drive (when its not leaking rain through the soft-top and you can see out of the tiny windows) :p

Grr  apparently FK have sent me two front LEFT dampers instead of one right and left, despite the boxes being labelled up correctly with the right part number.

On the plus side, nothing needs changing except suspension top mounts. :)

KYB rear dampers for sale

In case anyone is interested the KYB dampers pictured earlier in this thread are for sale, part number 343486. I ended up replacing the standard parts on the car like-for-like. I found it difficult to get the KYB ones to adequately clamp down, I suspect because the lower eye seemed to be ever so slightly larger than standard. I seem to recall people encountering a similar issue with other brands (Koni/Bilstein?) and it being overcome quite simply, but having the others on hand it was quicker to go standard.

They are more or less as new, and a bargain (IMO) at £40 + P&P. They are in SE London and could probably be posted although I'd prefer collection. I may also be able deliver anywhere between SE London and W/NW London depending on location.

Well I've received the correct damper now, and also got two top mounts for the rears to fit, just waiting on my mechanic to find a suitable time to do it. Been driving around with 3 new dampers and one old! (yes I know, not recommended, but I can't get to work otherwise).

At least from the back, notwithstanding the knocking (which will be the top mounts) it feels a lot smoother - the ride is still firm, but bumps are actually damped, which is nice. Pogoing is gone, and it just feels a lot more under control, I have to push harder than I would like to get the back to skip.

Haven't noticed that much ride difference from the front because I'm still stock on one side, except for when turning right at speed it feels a lot smoother and under control, so once they are all changed i'll be much happier.

hi there, are you still using the kw dampers? if so how are they feeling? you mentioned top mounts, are they needed? if so where did you get them? im looking at these as they are still less than £45 for a full set, so would like to know how they go.

(FK) dampers - I can't give you an honest appraisal as I'm no expert, and my stock dampers were well overdue a replacement. All I can say is, the FK dampers are a big improvement on the stock dampers that had done 75k miles. The car feels like how a lot of people describe it, the nimbleness is back and the steering is sharp and controlled (when turning right anyway :D ). The ride is still very firm, and you still notice bumps in the road, but the car doesn't "hit" them so hard. I bought the top mounts from shop4parts.co.uk, but they were a bit pricey and could probably be found cheaper, I just needed them in a hurry.

so u just bought ur top mounts as a replacement? and there is no need to change them to fit the kw dampers? are you using standard springs also?

He has the FK not the KW, unless you require fully adjustable suspension you are best getting the koni sport and spring package from demon tweaks

sorry I just noticed, I did mean fk. I was trying to find out if I need anything more to fit these, along with my new springs. I hope not.
