Hi I'm wondering if anyone on here knows where to get a new plastic bit with the gear numbers from or the best way to restore it? Mine is all badly faded and is the original gear knob..

That's really smart... how do u pop it off without breaking it? Also what's under your CD player?

gently prized it off with a removal tool (any flat like blade will do) 4 prongs hold it on , just take your time and work your way around , then sand and respray, finally, add a clear coat to seal/protect

under the CD tray is my deodorant :)

I might try that.. As a say mine is faded and patchy. I tried to chance it and get dealer to fix it, they said no ?
Awww so it is lol

mine was worn and in places down to base plastic, , just use a fine grade wet and dry and then prime, spray, spray, spray, hand paint numbers and then add clear coat to protect.

Yeh, this is what I'm dealing with... ImageUploadedByFIAT Forum1387796946.747320.jpg

The respray, or the deodorant?.

Seriously, these sort of jobs make great little DIY projects - you can save some £££ and end up with a 'better than new' result.

If you visit a decent model shop, you'll find no end of tools, paints & materials for doing this sort of stuff & you can buy them in quantities that are appropriate for what you're trying to achieve. Many years ago I invested in building up a serious modelers toolkit, with minature power tools, compressors & airbrushes & it's paid for itself many times over on small car repair projects.

For example, you can buy a small bottle of dichloromethane for pennies & it will weld pratcically any two plastics together.

have u contacted ur local fiat to see if the can sort u out the gear knob cap? might be cheaper than re spray btw. for DIY u ll need plastic primer, selection of sanding paper, paint and a clear coat that adds up.

That's where it pays to go down the model shop where you can buy small tins of plastic paint in a wide range of colours (no need for primer) & a compatible lacquer. Airbrush it on & it'll look good as new :).

See, all those hours spent making 1/72 scale model Spitfires had a purpose after all.

yeah for a model its fine, but for a gear knob top cap where factory paint came off I think u will need primer, paint and clear with wet sand in between for best result. Any other way it will just flake off again in a month. Besides I dont think OP has and airbrushing compressor.

I've not tried phoning my local Fiat dealer. I was there a few weeks back cos somehow my side indicator had fallen off the drivers side. So got a new one for just over £13.

Phoned fiat and they said they don't sell the cap on it's own. A whole stock cost £100

Let me have a look in my garage I think I still have a top cap from when I did my gear knob mod. I ll let you know tomorrow or day after. If not, remind me :D
