Hello I'm new to this forum and need some help. I have a 2001(Y) 1.8 HGT Arbarth and I am getting a diesel like ticking noise from the engine when it starts and also when running. It sounds like the valves to me. I was gonna adjust them but from reading thru some threads i have heard that they are self adjusting on the HGT's, is this true? And also sometimes when the engine is cold it cuts out unless i rev it. When it does this the revs go up and down between approx 800 and 1200 ish. I'm gonna clean the idle valve and clean the throttle housing, but do i need to put a new varriator on and ir it turns out to be the valves is there anyway of adjusting them or do I need to buy new ones? If i do i bet they wont be cheap cos the HGT's are 16 Valves. Cheers ppl.

Variator is broken.

Also get done at the same time. Cam belt & tensioners, water pump and aux belt.

Will need to see a specialist or Fiat for this. Best specialist price ive seen is £290+ vat all in. Fiat i beleive charge considerably more.

You should have all three done every 36k or 3 years. Not pretty if the cam belt snaps, And the variators often only last 4 years! Stupid to do one without the other.

Variator may have gone but isn't helped by old oil
12000 mile service even with fully synthetic isn't
a good thing. If it's near cambelt time change then
get it done a cambelt snap can cost over £1000 to
put right fiat may want £2500 or more.

Change the oil and filter and see if it quietens up
my 1.8 stilo had a noisey variator when I bought
it but the oil was black now its quiet again.
As I can buy good quality semi synthetic
(Not recommended for the 1.8) for around £11 per
5 litre I have used that but will change it at
4000 miles as it helps clean the engine
I wouldn't recommend flushing oil as I have seen
too many engines die after a few months of it's use.

What's wrong with only doing it every 12k?. I do it every 12k on my 05 Punto sometimes 15k if im feeling lazy / don't have time to change it.

I've just hit 82,000 miles and haven't got a single problem with the engine. Its also been remapped and got induction kit so its working harder than most cars.

But most of what you say is right new oil can sometimes quieten it (for a while).

It may be worth noting a tuning company called GSR make an uprated variator which should last the life of the car!.

Your engine isn't the 1.8 found in the HGT though, they are more temperamental with the oil tbh.
