General 1.6 Engine Fault - Please help.

Fault codes read - it was the fault that had logged on the ECU still showing from cylinder 1.
Fault cleared.
Car now running.
Fingers crossed

Im really scared to use the car now!

Just had to be a bad cambelt change to burn the inlet valves. They're much softer than the exhaust valves as they don't normally have to deal with exhaust temperature gases blowing passed them

Well you're ok now. Keep an eye on things like coolant and oil and if things look normal for a dew weeks then the gal has been given a new lease of life:)

Decks - many thanks for all your help.

How can you detect if you have had a bad cambelt change? would the car recognise or do you only know when somethings gone terribly wrong like in my case?

Im assuming cam belt has been put on correctly this time but is there anyway I can tell?

Also how long would it take for a badly timed cam belt to burn through the valves again? are we talking days, weeks, months or years?

Thanks again

In your case, going by what you experienced, then the only way to have proved it was a bad fitment would have been to recheck the valve timing with the correct timing tools before taking the head off again

Sometimes the car can spot a problem and throw up a "timing synch" fault code if it spots the camshaft is not in synch with the crankshaft. That usually happens at a certain rpm eg engine fault comes up as you reach a certain rpm but then goes out as you drop the rpm again

First way to be more certain that the job will be done correctly is to make sure the garage has the correct cam alignment tools because it's a real risk without them, then the second big hope is that they know how to use them properly:)

If the inlet valves aren't closing at the right times then it would burn through the valves very quickly
