Hi guys

My Bravo has developed a whine in 2nd, and a crutch in Reverse.
she whine quietly in all gears but in 2nd its loud. this only happenswhen she is pushed hard.

she also has a grumbling noise at idle, it goes away when the cluch is pressed.

the problem i have is the car, a 2001 bravo 1.6 with cable gearbox and i cant find any gearboxes the same, also i love the ratios in the box i have. 1st, 2nd, 3rd good for accelerating and 4th, 5th are longer for lower fuel consumption.

Need help as i dont know what to do

What do you mean - you don't know what to do?

Find a garage or gearbox specialist, and get them to fix the failed bearing in the gearbox.

From memory, a failed input bearing gives more noise in lower gears because there is more leverage or pressure when they are engaged.

What i meant was, what car can i get another gearbox because i cant find another bravo with a cable changer,

can i get a box from a Stilo, or any other Fiat.
my local gearbox specialist wants £800 to recon my gearbox.

i only paid £700 for the car

Sounds like your gearbox place is taking the mick or doesn't want the job... Hopefully a new clutch was included...

The repair work shouldn't really be too much above the cost of removing and refitting the box (or a spare box) so you should find someone more competitive. A Marea 1.6 box would probably be OK (check the gearing..) but there are online parts search sites that will send your request to various breakers who will contact you with parts offers, if you want to go down that route. Some breakers might even fit it..

I have a Spare Marea gearbox Bravo is a late 2001 model with a Cable system, as the Mareas all came with the rod systems.
i was wandering if a Stilo box would fit ?

the price for the rebuild includes a total bearing change with a FIAT genuine clutch included. But theres no way i can afford £800.

was looking for a cheaper option. if i can find a gearbox i wont have to pay labour charges as i would do the work myself (y)

reading through the forum ive noticed on some fiat gearboxes you can change between cable or rod system by swaping parts over, it looks like the parts are bolt on/off. maybe you can do that? or maybe you could change the gear stick in your car. Surely a good gearbox refurb place can sort the box you have anyway?

UPDATE:

just been to a garage which checked the oil level of the box. it turns out the box only had about Quater oil, he alse said the damage is done, so will need a replcement gearbox:bang:.

Adrian, for some reason the base of gearstick is welded to the chassis of the car so cant be swaped

It is not welded, it is a fairly large part bolted on, you need to take exhaust heatshields and rear enginemount off to get access to it.

The handbrake lever comes off with it and the other end goes to the firewall.

:D:DUPDATE (again lol):D:D

despite what the bloke fron the "specialist" says:devil:, i traced the problem to a worn inner CV boot, dont quite know how the oil is spewing out of their but thats where its comming from. getting a new boot on monday and some oil ro replace.

i filled the box up with oil and she stopped squeeling like a pig, so i guess there is little damage if any ???

small problem i have is the ABS isnt working either and i have MOT tomorrow
