buy a 1.2 16v, they are brilliant engines, and really smooth on a long journey and overtaking isnt a problem drop to 3rd and put your right foot the the back to the headlight, i have never had an airbag failure and i have owned my 3dr 1.2 for 3 and a half years. all in all great little cars, cheap insurance and cheap to run

Yes I know, and like I said, not all 3dr stilo's have OCS. ...:rolleyes:(y)

The point I was making is both types of car have their fair share of problems, doesnt matter if its the nice 3dr or the metrocab 5dr.
Sure you may be lucky (as I guess I am who's never a had an air bag issue at all in a 6.5 year old car :spin:) but in general you're get far more air bag issues with the 3 dr plus the problem with door cards failing early - although to be fair that's a common problem for all 3 dr cars.

....and what exactly is a metrocab  :nono:

Not sure why anyone is saying petrols are slow but my JTD certainly isn't :slayer: Never owned a car like it for being in front of everything. It's like you look ahead at something you want to be ahead of and then you are; or take a look at what's behind you and then realize everything is way behind you. It's something to do with how the JTD delivers power without seemingly getting into a sweat about it. One thing that never changes, when getting a move on, is glancing slightly away from the tacho to the speedo - it's always a shock

Pretty much what I said from the start (y)

The 1.6 is also underpowered. I'd love to test an 1.8 - that would be a normal engine for a car this heavy. I don't think the 1.6 is much better economically, as I usually floor it. I don't care about fuel consumption or fuel prices, and I try to look away when I hear the sound of a diesel. :D

arnt the 1.6's a lot lighter than the 1.8's

Just the 1.2 and 1.4, all others had either a 5 speed or in the case of the 2.4 a Selespeed. Well, until the later one's when they too were 5 speeds :)

Fiat dont have a 6 speed box which can handle the power/torque of the more powerful engines so it was never fitted to them. .

Forgetting the diesel 150 there guys. I enjoy a 6 speed box also!

^^^and the better the fun when you embarrass bigger engine cars, (i've shown up 1.6 16v astras a few bmw 320's in my little 1.2, its not all about power it's how you use what you've got :D)

someone open a window because i can smeel a little bs :p

maybe the astra...

but the bmw must not have been trying

Maybe in a 0-60 challenge or racing on the motorway (is anyone that dumb (n)) but I suspect scottie is talking about reading the road ahead well and anticipation.

This can often put you ahead of much bigger cars and once you get to the windy bits then you can even push your advantage still further (obviously depends on skill of the other driver)

Ah, didn't know that. I guess it'd be the joint development with GM that helped them get a 6 speed box capable of handling the grunt of the Multijet :)

Have found myself that the 1.2 is a fairly swift car compared to many 1.2s. Loves to be revved for sure, but also seems a lot smoother than many others I've tried. Since the suspension's been done on mine as well, it does make it a heck of a lot better. Helps me to maintain my speed on the twisty stuff, which is great...less gear changes and braking needed :D

now now JFL of course it wasnt a 1/4 mile sprint, i raced a 320 BMW from Portrush to Cookstown one night i think it's approx 40miles, yes i admit he had me of the straights but when we got to the twisties i was a good bit ahead of him and i beat him into cookstown where he turned off.
and i beat several 16 16v astras in sprints and thats with my 18inch wheels on my little 1.2, one guy actually pulled up beside me after saying "Them 18's kill that car"
he must have thought it was a 2.0 or an abarth 2.4, i turned to him and said "what you talkin about its a 1.2 16v so...... :nerner:"

anyways back to topic
buy a 1.2! they're great little cars and cheap as chips to insure.

Someone open all the windows because I can smell a lot of bs.

The 1.6 piddles all over the 1.2 and there's no way a 1.6 would trouble the Beemer, bends and all especially with 18" wheels. Not wanting to offend anyone here but I feel compelled to address such claims. Avoid the 1.2 or 1.4 if you can, 1.6 if you have to but the JTD all the way (then you might stand a slight chance against the 320).

but im not after this car to race... i just want a nice looking car with a decent engine

well thats my experience with my car no Bull, believe it or believe not, i really dont give a s***, i'm just putting my point across, if you can steer in the bends you'll p!ss over most cars.

@scotty if you want a good car with a good engine and cheap running costs buy a 1.2

The 1.6 doesn't outrun anything but other underpowered cars with similiar wheight - as the gear ratios are good. I would never try a 320... 6 pots vs 4 pots (without turbo) is not a clever idea in the first place.
