General 1.2 or 1.4

General 1.2 or 1.4

Its possible that the DVLA has for whatever reason the wrong info. If so this will mean the V5 and all the sites that access the DVLA database for info will also be wrong.

The only way to be 100% sure about this is to cross reference the VIN with the manufacturer.

Vehicle Identification

Manufacturer: Fiat
Model: Punto (grande) Dynamic
Year: 2006
Colour: Red
Fuel Type: Petrol
Engine Size (CC): 1242

Obviously the engine photo will be the most definitive way of confirming, but that looks to me like you have indeed got a 1.2. I bet theyve just got confused because it's a Dynamic & some salesman who doesn't know much about Puntos has thought if it was an Active it'd be 1.2 and if it's Dynamic it'd be 1.4. Also, Fiat dropped the 1.2 a couple of years into production so that couldve also led to some confusion amongst the less educated sales staff.

Have a snoop about on AutoTrader or fiat.co.uk for main dealer used prices for the 1.2 Dynamic and then go back to your dealer & ask about getting them to give you some money back. Unless the price was already in line with other 1.2's ofcourse, in which case youre not really out of pocket.

That's what i'd do anyway, providing i was happy with everything else.

Thats the plan. I think the salesman was only going by what their database said, as all the printed documents I got from them says a 1.4

I'll take it up the garage, see what happens. I'll keep you all informed.

Sounds like a pretty genuine mistake, as much as it loathes me to say it about an organisation like Evans Halshaw!

Hope this helps figure out what it is. Needless to say, there is a lot of space in the engine bay

Bit of a Noob question, but was there such a thing as a 1.4 Dynamic in 2006?

I thought the standard Dynamic was 1.2 and the Dynamic Sport 1.4?

I thought the Dynamic was offered with a 77bhp 1.4 from launch. Then Fiat made the Dynamic Sport trim but it only lasted for what seemed like about a week before quietly disappearing? Could be wrong but you hardly ever see anyone mention Dynamic Sport, although i know it existed.

I thought it was Active, Active Sport, Dynamic, Eleganza and Sporting to start with. Then the Dynamic Sport came along in addition, but for very little time. I don't even think it added much kit over the standard Dynamic. Then they did abit of trim/equipment changes (around the same time as the blue badge went red) & dropped Active Sport in favour of GP trim.

According to the handbook....

the engine type and serial number is:

"printed onto the cylinder block and shows the type and production serial number."

1.2 engine code type - 199A4000
1.4 engine code type - 350A1000

Your mileage may vary.

Went up to the garage, they'll have a look at their documents on monday and get back to me, and then we get sort out how much I'm due back over in difference.

Its a good car and I'm happy to keep it, but I dont want to be paying for a 1.4 when its a 1.2, you know what I mean :)

That's of no use whatsoever.

The physical size of the 1.4 and 1.2 8v is identical. What did I say...?

Easy check is to look at the engine (or take a pic and post on here). The 1.4 8v has a valve timing variator solenoid on the cam cover (between the oil cap and breather hose). The 1.2 doesn't have one.

Need a closer pic of this area (it's almost covered-up in the one above)! ;)

Regardless, I think we have established that it is a 1.2, as I'm leaning more to believe my insurers and the DVLA rather than the word of Evans Halshaw. I'm still keeping it however, I was looking for a 1.2 or a 1.4 so I could cut costs on having the 1.8 Toledo of Torment.
