Just new here guys and gals, had a good poke round first looking for the above being a common problem and couldn't see anything right away.

The car has full MDSH (for what thats worth) got it second hand with 12k on it and it's had no major work. It's got 15k ish on it now and when it was in for it's MOT the garage said the gearbox was leaking oil and quoted 400+ to put it right, and they said the crank case seal was leaking and that was around the same price as well.

Now I know these cars are not bulletproof but I would not have thought those things should be going on a car this old with this kind of milage. Any thoughts on that bit?

Also, those prices (need to check exactly what it is they say is wrong) seem rather high for whats required.

Even though the car is second hand etc I am strongly considering going after the garage for not spotting it (I think it was there when we got sold it) and persuing them under consumer law for goods of non merchandable quality.

Any comments? Is this a common fault with these engines?

you say 2k plate you mean year 2000 ?? or 02 ? if 02 it should be warranty job as they came with 3 years. if its 2000 then wow thats low milage. i agree with you i wouldny of thought that something liek that would go on car that age.

you need to find out exact;y what they are fixing for that price, it may be a huge labour charge in wich case you can shop around for smaller garage that charges alot less. i know fiat dealers charge about £60 hour labour

Yeah I meant year 2000..

Total bitch really since we paid that little bit more to get something with low miles to avoid all this crap :(

I had a crack seal go on my engine, it would have cost me £500 but the dealer screwed up, and had to rebuild part of the engine, so I got it at a reduced rate... and a rebuilt engine :).

Depending on which part of the gearbox is leaking, it could be expensive, but if it's just a seal on the belhousing then I'd expect that the cost is down to labour... and a bit of bs from the dealer. If the cars out of warrenty there is no point in taking it to a main dealer, take it to a reputable independent garage.

The age and milage of the car may be to blame also, if the cars not been used frequently things begin to seise up and stop working as they're supposed to. If you then start piling on the miles the stuff thats perished will break sooner.

Yeah low miles on the clock, but the car is used every day and taken for a blast now and then to try and even things up a little.

Any recomendations for a garage in north london who would do this well and for sensible money?

I would suggest you have a good look to see what is leaking. Gearbox leak and crankcase leak could be one and the same. I had a gearbox leak done under warrenty Punto 1.2 2000. From the amount of sealent round the joint it looked as though Vardys had just slackend all the bolts a bit, eased the gearbox back, squeezed a load of sealent in and tightened it back up. £400 seems a lot to pay, especially twice!! lincoln

Cheers lincoln for that!

I intend getting the car on a ramp to have a good look at it and get an idea of how bad it is and I still need to get as much out of the dealer about what he thinks the problem is too, just too busy at the moment. If it's dry this weekend I might have a wander down there and see if they will do anything for me, not holding out much hope there though.

Would still be interested in anyone else with the same engine having had this problem even if it's just to get an idea if it's just one of those things..

sounds dodgy to me :( did they fail the mot on an oil leak? they cant do that,

clean it all up an post a pic of where its actually leaking,

Nope didn't fail they just advised..

It's the GF's motor, the dealer phoned her and told her it was leaking and said they would have someone call her and tell her exactly what the problem was, nboody did..

When she picked it up they just put "gearbox leaking oil" on the jobsheet and left it at that.

It's not a big leak, as in it's not pissing out all over the place or anything. I am guessing it's just a slightly perished seal but I will have to phone them and ask exaxtly what they saw and then check it for myself. When I get a chance to do that I will post up a pic so you can see and advise ...

Cheers

J

Will do mate. Nice rabbit btw, I have two of them in the house ;)

Need to stop flying model planes and spend a bit of time under the gf's motor I think ;)

I was like "no way" when she said, now I love the little critters. I am clearly the softest 18st Geordie in the whole world :)

Mate coming over later today with some small ramps, hopefully we can just dismiss this, but for some reason (bearing in mind all the other posts of woe and trouble) I doubt it ;)

One thing seems to be true; most, if not all fiat dealers suck :(
