Are the 1.1 SPI and GT Turbo engine for Punto Mk.1 made with the same engine block? That is, can a 1.1 SPI be remade into a GT Turbo engine, with replacement of most of the parts?
 
I doubt it. The 1.1 belongs to the FIRE generation of engines whereas the GT Turbo unit is a 1372cc version of the old Lampredi designed single overhead cam engine which had it's first home in the 128 in 1969. Back then it produced 55hp from 1116 cc. 30 years later, basically the same engine, was in a Punto producing 136hp from 1372cc (100hp / litre), a turbocharger, intercooler, fuel injection and 8 sodium cooled valves the size of stove pan lids.

im looking to do a GT conversion later in the year in a seicento!:D
Is all the mounts the same as the 1.1 and 1.2 puntos as i know the 1242 spi punto is a straight swap in a seicento with the engine mounts been the same etc as im needing to know if we are going to need to make new engine mounts! Has anyone got any pics of the GT engine they could send to me @ Jimmy17uk @ hotmail.com:D

I'm considering swiching my 1.1 SPI to GT engine, and in my registration card there's the serial number of the engine block. Here noone minds all the extra tubing, intercooler, turbine, fancy air filters, extra horsepower and stuff when the numbers on the car and the numbers in the licence are the same, so I thought just keeping the same block and changing everything else (wishfull thinking). It seems I'll have to go trough more paperwork (and buy a working GT engine). What should I keep my eye on when buying the motor? I intend to buy a used one, and I'm ready to invest in fixing anything that can be fixed, so I'm interested - what can't? That is, what sort of malfunction should I tollerate, and what's a really broken engine?
 
Here in Serbia I can't import a car that is older than 6 years. I could buy a Punto GT here, but it would be in a pretty bad condition - bad roads, bad fuel, bad workshops, ignoring the service intervals, bad engine oil, bad cooling water... All in all, I'm better off with selling my perfectly running 55 (bought in Italy from first owner, and perfectly serviced, gone only 73.000km for now) and adding money to buy something newer, like Bravo HGT... Still, I would like to have a turbocharged car, and fitting a turbine to 1108cc was not such a good investment... I might just go trough the pains of installing a Lancia engine, but that might be a bit of an overkill.
