Hi

Has anybody got any detailed instructions on changing the timing belt on a 1.6 tempra?

The Porter manual is less than helpful.

I have a squealing noise from the belt which could be :

1. Timing belt tensioner
2. Water pump bearings
3. Alternator

As I have only just bought the car and don't know when the belt was last changed seemed like a good Idea to do the belt anyway.

Thanks:confused:

Is it a petrol or diesel ?, I can describe the Diesel as I have changed mine several times, it's a bit more involved than the petrol but is relativley easy. I also have a petrol car and could describe that as well if needed.

Does the squealing change with wet/dry weather ?.
If squealing at tickover try this, when idling puff a small spray of WD40 over the side of the alternator belt, be carefull don't get caught in the belt. Not much just a puff, if the squealing stops or lessens markedly it's the alternator belt, it might need tightening or changing.

Does the car have power steering ?, the belt tends to squeal on full lock, you can also try the wd40 trick on this one as well.

Belt tensioners tend to rumble as does a duff water pump. With the engine off, grasp the water pump pulley and pull up-down, any play could be the bearings.
Never had the bearings go on the alternator.
