Can anyone confirm if a UK 1993 Tempra 1.6 spi would have had a Fuel cut off switch fitted?

This may be the reason I cant get my engine to run? I have fitted it to an X1/9 recently. The porter manual says 'some models' are fitted with a fuel cut off inertia switch... Cant find any legislation regarding when they started fitting the safety inertia switches.

Hopefully this is my problem...

Thanks in advance for any help

Check under the passenger's seat. If there's not an inertia switch there, the fuel pump will be controlled by a tachometric relay that relies on ignition pulses, or just a normal relay on the bulkhead.

Thanks Devran, this is the problem. I only have engine, ecu and engine bay loom. Bought it from someone who had had it fitted to an x1/9 in the past. It did come with an extra loose relay. As well as other random bits and pieces, nothing too obvious though. I have it all wired up and plumbed in, just can't get the fuel pump to run?

Crank sensor is fitted and connected. It's a stainless steel one. I'm expecting the fuel pump to pressurise/prime the system when ignition is switched on and I'm getting nothing. The circuit diagram in the porter manual does say there is a fuel vapour cut off (item 153 page 160) switch connected to the ecu. Which i don't have. I will check the wire colours tomorrow and presence of spark. Hopefully I will be able to bridge the connector and replicate a switch...

Ok we now have fuel pump priming with ignition. Have spark, but no fuel seems to be getting through, despite pump running. Getting closer...

The cars now been off the road for over a month and I've put in over 40 hrs work. Maybe 50...

The porter manual circuit diagram does have a few differences. It mentions a fuel vapour cut off solenoid rather than an inertia safety switch. I also have three wiring connectors left unused.

These are we think the interior loom link (rev counter?), temp sensor and one more ???

Would it run without the temp sensor?

We have been tracing wires with a meter and noted down the function of all the ecu pins. Next step is to try and connect the two pins which are meant to be the fuel cut off solenoid...

I'm now totally stuck. I have spark, fuel pump 'priming' on ignition but the injector is not squirting any fuel so it wont start.

The engine loom is fitted. I am only left with, air con connector from ecu, fuel vapor cut off switch which I have 'bridged' and one connector which joined the tempras internal loom. This is 3 wires. Going by the diagram one of these is a fuse for the lambda but I think this is wrong, one just says internal connection and one I can't recall but doesnt show one the circuit diagram.

From what I understand the 93 tempra didn't have an inertia fuel cut off but some other switch which connects 12v to the ecu. The porter manual calls it an inertia switch on one page and a fuel vapor cut off solenoid on the other (wiring diagram)

Is it possible I have a faulty or blocked injector?

Any ideas appreciated

I have done some further reading in the tipo section. It seems there is a fault which can occur with the injector causing difficulty starting.

I have also figured out that the fuel vapour cut off solenoid is (I think) to do with recovering condensated fuel from the charcoal canister system? and therefore emissions system which should not be vital to the engine running.

I agree that the vapour recirc isn't likely to be the issue,

can't help any further though : - {

The problem with fuel supply was a seized injector. Probably overheated due to incorrect wiring for a moment or perhaps seized from being in storage. We put some current from a power supply on it and reversed the polarity a few times and it free'd up :)

Facing same problem on my punto did u found the problems myb

What is your Punto?
Haha 9 years already!

The problem was that I'd mistaken one of the earths for a positive so I guess the ecu had no earth and it wouldnt start. Swapped the earth back onto the body and it worked!

I then had plumbing issues to work out :)

Which earth myb . It prime petrol to rail with pressure but injectors not squirt wen u crank please see the link vid thats wat exactly its doing

Looks like they are injecting fuel to me? Surely more fuel at first is normal?

Is the bottom crank pulley phonic wheel fitted in the right position with the pip located in the hole?

Also is the crank sensor plugged in and in the correct position (fully inserted) next to the crank pulley?

I haven't checked . First they spray more fuel and spray less fuel . The crank sensor is in position but i dont know the phonic wheel. Some one onced said it can be sprocket its out of its way or finished
