1995 Tempra, 2.0, 8V, starts well when cold. Motor turns well but struggles to start after it has been turned off for a several minutes after reaching normal operating temperature. The battery is 3 years old and charged up and I recently had the starter brushes replaced. Any thoughts as to why this is happening?

Mick, indeed it's been awhile between spark plug changes. It's a worthy tip to consider, one that did not come previously to mind. I will get them looked at and will report back.

Spark plugs were changed 5000 km ago and look fine, it must be something else.

Re: 95 Tempra warm start problem

In reality it's not a hot start problem, the motor turns well but has trouble starting when warm (20 minutes after being stopped after running hot). :bang: Any thoughts on what would cause this?

The only obvious one I can think of is the coolant sensor. This determines how much fuel is injected.
Mick

On the Tempra 1.8ie there was a VAE Value to adjust the idle speed and an Air Bypass screw to set the base idle speed.

With engine warm and running, remove connector to air bypass valve. Revs should drop to about 850 to 900 rpm. Reconnect connector and revs should rise to 1200 to 1300 rpm and then drop back to 850 rpm.

Sometimes the air bypass valve my temporarily stick. This can be overcome by injecting/spraying WD40 or similar light oil into one or both sides/ports of the valve assembly (remove a hoses)

The correct setting of base idle via the Air Bypass is to set the idle is to the same value that the ECU regulates via the VAE valve, ie 850 to 900 rpm, such that the connection and disconnection of the valve cable should cable makes little or NO difference in the idle speed. Best idle also obtained with plug gaps of 1mm.

If the base idle speed / air bypass is set too low then on restarting when warm and the fuel mixture is not rich (as when cold) then the overall start up parameters can be affected. It is not untill the engine is running that the VAE Valve would come into effect to open up and try the stable idle conditions.
