New Fiat Tempra owner - Wiper jets and other fun!

Greetings all,

I only yesterday picked up an L reg Tempra SX TD Station wagon. Other than lacking a little TLC, there is little wrong with it. However, it does have an annoying problem, the washer jets for the front and rear screens do not work. The pump motor runs in both directions, but inspite of a full and clean washer bottle, no water comes out. The other weird thing I noticed was that the plumping and pump appears to be in place for the headlamp washers, even though it has none.

My other problem is that it needs new rear wheel bearings and I cannot find any. Halfords do not even have the Tempra listed on their database, would I be able to buy Tipo bearings and use them instead and are the rear bearings and easy job?

Hope you can help and TIA

Congrats on your purchase. Halfords are the nemesis of Italian care owners. Try a good motor factors instead.

GazC...how did you fix it the non-return valve and where is/are they? My rear washer on my Tempra estate hasn't worked for 2 years.
Any help would be appreciated.

Right, The non-return valve for the rear screen is located in a plastic conduit that sits underneath the expansion tank. You need to un bolt the tank and sit it ontop of the battery. The non return valve looks like a small black plastic cylinder with input and output unions on it in line with the feed line.

You need to remove the valve by either pulling the pipes off, or if they are tight, by cutting the pipes (I had plenty spare). Then, using a small flat blade screw driver, prise off the bottom and remove the following:

a - The centre of the seal (the offending item - try to save the outer collar of the seal)

b - the plunger and the spring

Refit the plunger back in it's place, but upside down without the spring and then push the bottom of the valve back in place with the remaining outer seal back on. Refit tha valve and test your washers and see if they work.

Now the valve will leak slightly, so wrap them up in waterproof tape or smear slicone over the outside of the valve and let it dry.

Refit all the bits and your done!

Alternativley, buy your self a new valve from Halfords for 1.49 (I didn't do that because Halfords was shut when I fixed the valves)

For my 1995 2.0 tempra SW both the front and rear windscreen washer non-return valves are positioned under the moulding that attaches the front windscreen washer nozzles.
