Hi All,

Firstly, my apologies if this is the wrong forum but nothing seemed to fit.

I'm wondering if anyone has experience of importing parts from Italy post Brexit?. The advice seems to be very confusing and all over the place.

Ebay appears to charge VAT automatically and the dealer tells me there's no other import fees/taxes, but I'm not confident they'd really know.

I don't want to end up paying 3x the price of the part...

Any experiences?

Steve

There are two thing going on:
Brexit
The eCommerce Regulations.
This is causing a lot of confuson.
Brexit means buying from the EU is now the same as buying from (say) the USA. Tax and duty is applicable.
eCommerce (which is actually based on a EU regulation) means that for anything sold to a retail customer on line from outside the UK either the overseas seller must be UK VAT registered and charge UK VAT (and pay it to HMRC) or if sold

through an online marketplace, e.g. ebay or amazon, they (ebay in this case) charge the VAT. This seems to have happened in this case.
What should not happen is the EU seller charging their local VAT.

If ebay collect the vat for the UK gov
Then you should not pay it to any delivery agent who may ask you for it . You will need a copy of the vat invoice from ebay showing you paid UK vat.

The delivery agent is very likely to charge you an extra fee for the extra paper work caused by brexit. Plus the delivery agent may also need you to pay import duties depending on the value of the order.

If the order arrives and there are lots of extra fees you don't want to pay then you can refuse to accept it, it will be returned (eventually) to the sender who may refund your order . Lots of maybes there.

You have to decide if it's worth it.

That is one of the costs of taking back control !

This is a nightmare, a rusty UK door lock for 25 quid or a new one for 41 quid plus unknown amounts of money and grief.

I've already bought a new part once (the wrong one due to no part numbers on it...)
so then you get into returns and at that point there's no point.

Rusty wins.

Charging more isn't as much of a problem as not even having enough information to make a choice.
