Hi all, wondering if anyone has any ideas on this ? When the engine heats up smoke comes out of the oil filler, and there is a lot of pressure with it. Exhaust gases maybe. Is there any breather or valve that could be blocked ?

The car has done almost 100k, is it worth spending money on ? Has it much life left in it ? My girlfriend really loves the car.

Thanks for any opinions.

Damien

I’m not an expert but I think the exhaust smoke is normal. A mate felt the pressure coming out of it by hand and thought it was less then it should, and that the smoke in the engine is exhaust gas. But just a guess. There’s no thick blue smoke, and no coolant in the oil as far as I can see. If that helps !

Service history is decent, although not always full Fiat history. It was owned by a mechanic before who said he looked after it, but then they all say that. In fairness though it’s been totally fine for the last six months. It’s a convertible and summer is coming so it’s worth keeping more than a standard one if it doesn’t get too expensive to repair.

PCV valve knackered ? Basically there is a breather that feeds crank case pressure through pipes and back into the air intake side of the engine so any oil vapours get burned off in combustion, if this is blocked it could cause some pressure, but then with the oil cap off the pressure would all vent out of the cap as it’s the path of least resistance

Thanks Andy, that was the kind of response I was hoping for ! I’ll check that out, if you’ve any info on where that is exactly it would help. Much appreciated.

For reference I don’t think this is the problem, I don’t know the characteristics of that engine, what you describe could be very normal. Monitoring any oil loss is important.

The PCV valve is usually part of a pipe coming front the rocker cover and feeding into the air intake pipes or box

It’s not normal, as she’s been using the car for about 6 months and it’s been fine, but now when it gets hot there’s smoke coming out from the bonnet which can’t be right. Looking into it after your response, I found that this PCV should be replaced every 30k or something, so I think I’ll replace it anyway. I can’t find any info for the 900cc twin turbo model though, only the larger engines.

Have you removed the airfilter..

There is probably a tube into the airfilter housing (feeding those oily vapours to be burnt)

Trace that back.. you might find a canister ;)

Twinair info is a bit thin on the ground .. especially in the English language

But the forum does have SOME engine service info
SEARCH should find it

The small inline mesh oil filter often gets a mention too ;)

Good luck.. and photos would be very welcome

My TA's have not been worked on by me YET..
